The Ortofon 2M Blue makes up the price difference by itself!

Just got my RT81 today!! Thanks to your videos along with several other creators, i realized how important it was to upgrade from my Victrola 8-in-1. Already in love with the sound quality! Didn’t want to break the bank though. The 85 here isn’t double the points on the 81 so i figure i still got a good deal.

For someone on more of a “budget” I would recommend getting an RT82 and then over time upgrading it to an 85.

Jarrett, when you were talking about the motors, you mentioned the basics and not the specifics. The 85 has a circuit that checks the speed 500 times per second, which means the 85 is far more accurate.

The RR85 has a better motor and it’s mounted farther from the platter. 1 extra point to the 85. Also the built in preamp is a nice to have but will not sound as good as a turntable without one, even if using the same external preamp.

I thought about upgrading my AT-LP120-USB to the RT85 but went with the Pro-ject Debut Carbon EVO and upgraded the platter to the acrylic one. Freaking LOVE the table and it makes practically no noise at all. Super happy with it!

Jarrett’s ultimate ironic tee would be a Crosley shirt

Just opened one of your videos now after months and I gotta say, nice hair! To me personally I like it better and it makes you look a lot younger.

The one thing I would really have liked to see was a head to head listening test and your opinion of what you heard.

You cannot go wrong with the RT85. I have one and love it!

Just got the RT82, you can gradually up grade the platter, and cartridge and boom you turn your rt 82 into an 85

I think another point that may be worthwhile mentioning is that both turntables have removable headshells, which allows for using different cartridges for different music applications like mono for instance....

Never trust pre aligned cartridges. Always check the alignment BEFORE you use them.

The RT85's not having a built-in switchable preamp is actually a plus to me, as most if not all built-in preamps aren't really all that good, and it eliminates just that much more electronics for the signal to go to before going to a good preamplifier, i.e., a dedicated external one. I hear a lot of people have actually de-soldered and removed the built-in preamp from their Audio-Technica AT-LP120USB turntables, for example.

It seems people are forgetting you can still use an external pre amp with the rt81. Just gotta turn the switch at the back

I love that each of the showdowns end with a freebie point specifically for not being Crosley Cruisers 😂😂😂

This is actually one of the processes I've been using recently whenever I think about buying something. It's good to know where exactly that extra money is going. For example, that 85 does look really nice, but just for me personally, the acrylic platter and 2m blue don't justify extra cash. I'd be perfectly happy with the 81 and mounting my own cart. Awesome vid!

Excellent again Jarrett. I have the Audio Technica LP60X Bluetooth version. Sounds like a high end turntable connected to my legacy Goodmans amplifier with 5 speakers and a sub. These two turntables in your video look the business, and I do think that belt drives have less chance of vibration and breakdown. Like the LP60X, I tend to sway more towards belt drives than direct, although your LP120 is a cracker.

I was hoping he would elaborate on what ive been hearing about the upper models having better motors with some kind of speed control and better wow and flutter specs. seems like this would have been an important point to focus on -- what I really dont like on ANY table is the belt being on the outside of the platter, seems cheesy to have the belt and motor pulley exposed to dust dirt and so on not to mention it looks low rent to me.
