My favourite part was when you said; “Looks like Chef Boyardee really dropped the ball on this.”

I use to love Ravioli as a child. I recently tried a can. It had a thin sweet taste. Too bad they changed recipe.

we dont eat it much at all now days either, but for a quick meal, if the hubby has to run to his kung fu work out, i add onion powder, garlic powder, sugar and some italian seasons and after nuking it, i add some dry italian cheese on top and he loves it that way.

I accidentally stumbled on this and even though it is from 4 years ago I thought I'd comment. My dad who is 82 used to be a 'name brand only' type guy. Del Monte canned vegetables and so on when I was a kid. Of course, back then 'generic' was pretty shoddy but now generic and store brands are as good or better than the big names. Just the other day we were discussing this because I had gotten some frozen fish sticks - a name brand that was mostly just coating, hardly any fish. I mean you don't expect much from fish sticks in the first place but for the name brand and price, they were very disappointing. I was hoping to find fish sticks like the ones i remember from childhood that were much bigger than they are now. On a whim the next time I shopped I picked up the Great Value fish sticks just to see if they were better or worse. They were SO much better, they were much more like the ones I remember from childhood, still not quite as big but they had less coating and were softer overall not so hard/crunchy. Anyway, I shop with my dad regularly and I mentioned it to him and he said "The Walmart stuff, almost all of it is really good." I laughed and said, You used to hate if mom got generic when I was a kid he said either it's gotten better or I'm not as picky now. I think it has gotten better. It is surprising sometimes when you realize the generic/store brands are better for less money.

Walmart's beef ravioli canned labeling looks like it was cooked in dumpster... then the dumpster dumped it's cooked beef ravioli into the metal cans...
They say never judge a book by it's cover... and it's obvious that the walmart's ravioli looks so much more delicious than the boyardee.

Welcome to the new era where the name brands take short cuts.. & the generics move right on in and pick up the slack!!

Not a competition. Chef Boyardee wins every time. Loved it as a kid. Love it now. Very convenient. Pop the top n dig in. The delicious sauce is just right. The ravioli and/or mini ravioli is delightful w the hamburger meat inside. I devour a can and enjoy every delicious bite. Thank u founder Hector Boyardee. U have a wonderful product I enjoy and will continue to enjoy for a long time. This is true comfort food. ❤😋

I'll have try the Great Value. The Chef Boyardee overstuffed is even worse than the regular ravioli. I dont like how thin the pasta is. The ravioli easily breaks open when I stir it around in the bowl.

Speaking of comparing brands, I like Great Value's Hot Pockets more than the real thing.

Try this some time. 2 cans of your favorite pasta and one can of Hormel corned beef hash. Trust me it really works. Makes for a real meaty tasty treat.

Great premise for a food channel. Eating Trader Joe's meat ravioli while watching this lol.

So both were made by ConAgra, the company that owns the Chef Boyardee trademark and recipes. I am with you in your assessment of each, as they are not the same recipe. I believe they use the 90's era recipe for the private label cans (in this case, Great Value) and their thinner, sweeter updated recipe for the name brand. It should be noted that NEITHER tasted like the Throwback recipe that came out about 5 years ago for that limited year run. I also believe the Great Value version has been discontinued by Walmart, which is a real shame, especially considering the differences.

I eat a can every Christmas eve just like Fonzie.

I'm thinking you should have constructed a special isolated sniffing chamber. They were very close together during the smell test

I bought a branded tin of mince and onion, 36% beef. Checked the supermarket brand - 65% beef! Always check ingredients!

I remember when they had the throwback Chef Boyardee ravioli. It tasted a lot better than the modern beef ravioli.

The last few cans of ravioli I've tried tasted like wet bread dipped in ketchup. The lasagna still tastes good.
