Here is the thing, since the swamp or wetland has different types of vegetation, bacteria, insects and animals, even when decomposing waste is dropped in the wetland, it's byproducts like carbon, gases (carbo dioxide, methane) and humus are utilized by aquatic plants as fertilizers. Humus is also fed on by bacteria, insects and other aquatic animals. Through this relationship the swamp is kept clean.

Further more, the diversified root system of the aquatic plants (different aquatic plants with different root types), helps to trap dirt, polythene bags, waste and rotten stuff, hence filtering the swamp water, which in turns makes it very clean for consumption.
