All I had to see were the words “Steely Dan” and I clicked...doesn’t matter the song title. 😉👍🏻

I believe it the Wall Street crash that started the Great Depression of the 30s.

I LOVE how you love Steely Dan; the smoothest music I know; smart (sometimes snarky) lyrics, jazz, R&B and soft rock all rolled into one.
“Caves of Altimira”
“Don’t Take Me Alive”
“Jack Of Speed”

One of my favorite Dan songs. Glad you reacted to it. Yes, they are referring to a stock market crash like what happened in 1929. Kind of a morbid subject but the song has an undeniable groove and great guitar work.

Song Facts says of Steely Dan's Black Friday, "Long before the term came to denote the shopping frenzy on the day after Thanksgiving, Steely Dan released this song about the original "Black Friday, " when on Friday, September 24, 1869 a failed ploy left many wealthy investors broke. The investors tried to corner the market on gold, buying as much of it as they could and driving up the price, but when the government found out, it released $4 million worth of gold into the market, driving down the price and clobbering the investors." Unremembered History backs up Song Facts with more information on Jay Gould and his failed attempt to corner the gold market. I would have bet it was the stock market crash of 1929 but, guess not.
