While options can be used for good, some of their features, like embedded leverage, make them a double edged sword. They can just as easily be used for responsible risk management and hedging as they can be used for speculation and gambling.

I did my Masters at University of Toronto in significant part because I wanted to study with John Hull, the author of THE textbook on options and derivatives. I did three graduate level semester long course on options and derivatives. I would never trade options. I look at the banks advertising their options platforms to retail investors, and I think it's just obscene.

I dabbled in options out of curiosity, and it scared the hell out of me. How quickly you can go from a winning trade to a losing one in a few minutes is terrifying. I managed to get lucky a few times but ended with a few hundred dollars in losses.
