CHANGING MY 911'S STARTER FAILURE EDITION

Normally I don't post failure videos but this was a particularly frustrating job that should not have been so difficult. There is a barrel nut on top of the transmission that holds the starter in place. Usually there are 5 or 6 washers in place so there is plenty of depth for the 10mm allen socket to get a grip but in the case of my car there is only one washer. Looks like it's off to the shop for this repair :(

Btw, my 1999 Mercedes Benz E55 AMG is currently for sale on Bring A Trailer and ends in 2 days. Check it out here:

I used a 3/8 long reach hex bit that is about 6" that I bought at Harbor Freight and it got the job done. The length of it puts the socket portion far enough back on starter at an angle that allows the bit to slide into the nut. I bought a metric set for about $20. I know that doesn't help you now.

if you put a regular nut instead of a barrel nut providing you could remove the barrel nut, you wont be able to tighten the regular nut all the way. What will happen is as you tighten the 17 mm socket will touch around the starter and will come out as you tighten. Hence the need for the barrel type. Ask me how I know. I spend 4 hrs removing the starter on my 84 and I have a lift !! Cheers from France.

What year is your 911? I suspect it's '87-'89 model with the G-50 gearbox, because you're supposed to be able to access the nuts on the earlier cars with the 915 gearbox. If it is, in fact, a G-50 911, then it's no surprise you weren't able to get to that nut; you have to do a partial engine drop. That's not nearly as difficult as it sounds -- just disconnecting the shifter linkage, removing a stabilizer bar, and the hoses on the heat exchangers. Then you lower the gearbox 6" with a jack. A hassle to be sure, but probably less work in the end than you did trying to get the second nut.
