As someone who's experienced burnouts in the U.K as a healthcare professional who also commuted, this work-life IMBALANCE is NOT worth it. Once your body shuts down on you, you become dispensable to your employers and it's even harder to get back to baseline. Cherish your youth & life & quality time with loved ones and aim for some kind of work-life balance.
Chronic stress is a killer!

4 hours of commuting everyday is a soul crushing endeavor. I’d quit that job or find a new location to live. Sacrifice is not worth it. It’s a job, not a life. I commuted like that for a 18months, looking for new job every single day.

2 hour commute one way means you spend 4 hours per day commuting to and from work. That is bot sustainable.

Used to work at a factory that was an hour away by bus, hated the feeling of wasting two hours of my day by just travelling. Ever since I got a new job that's ten minutes on foot away, I've been having such a better day-to-day life

I work a minimum wage job, 8 hours per day in my country. Not much, but it pays the bills and put food on the table. But it's only 10 minutes walk from home. After finishing work I get to spend evenings doing chores, tends to my potted plants, gaming etc. etc.

Getting home at 10 30 pm every single day after work is not ok...

True story: when my friend visited me from Japan, we met on a weekday. He was utterly shocked that we were able to have dinner at 6pm -- something considered a luxury at his job. He really reinforced the salaryman stereotyp.

So yup, 40 mins overtime seems absolutely tolerable, no different from western work life. 🎉

You can do this routine for a few years while you’re young without kids; you don’t know it but that schedule will shorten your telomeres; the stress will catch up to you

Just like that for me but I’m in Germany.
Living spot: Small town outside of Munich
Job in the busiest road next to the main subway station

Travel 2 hours there and back daily
Starting work at 8.00 to 9.30
Finishing work at 18.30
At home at roughly 21.00-22.30

Eating my food and straight to sleep.

I was able to live like this for 2 years until I quit my job. It bites you off mentally, especially if you’re working with rich born people who keep telling you how sweet their summer vacation spot is that their super rich father has bought.

Never again. I’d rather be a nerd than a luxurious high class worker fuck that.

The "laundry ignored for days" is so relatable. I work too many hours.

2 hours of transport from office to home? That's so awful. 😱

When I was working in Kure, Hiroshima, I used to “ぶらぶら”on the way home every Friday, it’s a 15mins trip on my bike, but I would take a long detour, about an hour, cruising along the coast. It helped me unwind and relieve some stress from work

Seems tough, especially in japan. I hope at least you like doing your current work. They def need more workers protection in japan.

Just got back from Tokyo ten hours ago. I had a great time; glad I was there as tourist and not a worker! Seems like most were off for Golden Week at least. Thoughts and prayers for the sararimans.

I used to remember this grind. The commute alone was demoralizing. Back then I had my PSVITA so it helped when the metro got stuck in the subway.

Sucks when you get home so late and have to take care of stuff around the house before sleeping. The its wake up at 6AM to do it all over again.

thinking bout it now is making me tired. we really do be taking our youthful energy for granted.
