That workaholic mindset is one of the major reasons why Japan’s population is continuously declining for MANY years.

My japanese fiance told me, as a salary men Japanese people stay longer at work to earn more money and additional for the pride and appreciation of the boss. Not because there is much work to do

Salarymen are trained to be like robots, systematically doing what they are expected to in the way they were instructed and not finding efficient or newer means of carrying out tasks in half the time they normally would. For a researcher such as myself, working in a Japanese lab, I've experienced this systemic way of doing things when I could get things done differently to yield the same results and sometimes even better results, but they either assume you're rude or presumptuous when you try to deviate from the norm, very exhausting I tell ya😅😅

Japanese companies like to follow the traditional standards, as long as it worked in the past they expect it to work now. But it's not really the case, they have to adapt to changes as well.

I keep reading and hearing statistics regarding productivity per hours worked in different countries.
Japan, Korea and China work very long hours but apparently their overall productivity drops off sharply for the longer hours worked.
European countries who work shorter hours have higher hourly productivity.
It's a well known phenomenon that the salaried man culture in Japan forces employees to just be there for excessive unnecessary hours beyond exhaustion and reasonable productivity.
This culture in Japan is physically, mentally and soul destroying for millions of employees who are all too terrified of the consequences of actually being seen to go home when their working day is over instead of remaining on for additional hours for no pay or reasonable additional productivity.

I've heard from some Japanese friends that they sometimes work slower than they could because if they were done with work after their shift would originally end the company would still think they were not committed enough. It's possible to finish within given hours but poor time management is being encouraged

There is a pathology in America for some - "getting lost in the working bubble" as an escape from family or other things... especially if the work is enjoyable or there is a perceived "mission" a person is passionate about...
...i offer Kurosawa's "Ikiru" as a reflection on "the big things"...

I understood by talking to japanese friends that it's very important to keep working after the time, just because they want to show effort to the manager and loyalty to the
I get that, BUT....
...if you DON'T get paid for those extra hours of work that you give to the enterprise or to the manager, it just means that your enterprise is NOT correct and
The extra hours that you make (FOR FREE) give more products and more services to the enterprise, to the owner/manager/whatever. The enterprise takes many extra hours of productivity FOR FREE and DOES NOT PAY YOU.
Where do all this extra money go??? Straight to the bank account of the enterprise's You work EXTRA for free; enterprise's owner get rich even more for EXTRA work (for free); and you become EXTRA
