What Does Corruption Do to a Nation?
Exploring the Impact of Corruption on Institutions, Economy, Poverty, and the Environment

Introduction
Corruption is a pervasive issue. It infects nations, their institutions and their people. In this article, we will examine how corruption affects a nation's morale and well-being. By examining four real-life examples, we see how corruption undermines institutional integrity, cripples the economy, exacerbates poverty, and leads to environmental problems. Further, we explore the urgent need to combat corruption. We discuss potential solutions on how to hold the guilty accountable.

1. Institutionalized Corruption
Corruption can take different forms, including grand corruption and petty corruption. Grand corruption occurs at the highest levels of government. It leads to major abuses of power, erodes the rule of law, destabilizes economies, and undermines confidence in good governance. The case of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych serves as a striking example of grand corruption. Yanukovych and his cronies now stand accused of embezzling billions of dollars. Despite the overwhelming evidence against him, Yanukovych enjoys impunity. This highlights the challenges faced by countries in prosecuting high-level corruption.

2. Destruction of Business Growth and Economic Consequences
Corruption hampers business growth. It wreaks havoc on a nation's economy. A case study from Tunisia illustrates how President Ben Ali used corruption to monopolize important industries, shutting out competition and hindering economic progress. This resulted in missed employment opportunities, failed entrepreneurship, and the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few. Despite Ben Ali's ousting, the restrictive economic laws he enacted remain in place, perpetuating inequality and impeding economic development.

3. Link between Corruption and Poverty
Corruption is intrinsically linked to poverty, as it diverts resources away from public services and those who need them most. The Russian Laundromat, a massive money laundering scheme, drained billions of dollars from Russia's public coffers, depriving citizens of vital services. By tracing the convoluted path of this illicit money, we see how corrupt practices involving fictitious loans, complicit judges, and international banks further perpetuated poverty and undermined public trust.

4. Environmental Implications of Corruption
Corruption also has detrimental effects on the environment. The garbage crisis in Lebanon provides a stark example of how corrupt practices can lead to environmental degradation. Through political connections and a monopoly on waste disposal, a company called Sukleen mismanaged garbage disposal, resulting in overflowing landfills, polluted water, and unsightly streets. This case exemplifies how corruption not only harms the economy but also compromises the natural environment and public health.

Conclusion and Call to Action
Corruption sabotages the foundations of a just and efficient government, inflates prices of essential goods, impedes education, tarnishes a nation's reputation, and imposes numerous other crippling difficulties. It is crucial for society to find effective and foolproof methods to combat corruption and hold the guilty accountable. Whether through strengthening institutions, implementing stringent anti-corruption measures, or fostering a culture of transparency and integrity, it is imperative that individuals, communities, and governments work together to eradicate corruption and build a brighter future for nations worldwide.

How about our new economic policies?
Was proposed for 20 years, ending in 1990. Every major economic sector given to a monopoly, and monetised by politicians. The country’s economic foundation was built by the British colinisers on the back of immegrants blood sweat and tears.
Mahatir singing anti colonial songs, sidelined the immegrants with pro Malay economic policies. Benefitted himself, his cronies and his children.
66 years have passed of Malay rule, the majority of the Malays are still poor.
