After 30 years of enduring the relentless whiteouts, the crumbling British Empire still clings to survival. But as the Captain’s final breath leaves his body, he realizes that mere survival is no longer enough in the current world.
Will years of struggle and sacrifice be undone by ideological infighting? Or can the new Steward reconcile the political factions and inspire society to believe that New London can still stand strong?

My captain then asked for his body to be thrown into the generator, so he could heat up the city one last time

Rest in peace, Captain. You can finally rest, and no longer fear anything.

The Steward shall take your place and lead us all

Is that the Captain?

Ominous last moments, if then

If you think about it, all the trials and tribulations turned the Captain (us) into a Dark Souls character. I mean for THIRTY YEARS, all these factions were brewing in the background waiting to take over, but nobody made a move. And why? Because *we* were still standing.

We, among the handful of thousands of people to survive the apocalypse while _billions_ died around us and the ecosystem suffered almost total extinction. We took a group of 80 and turned it into a thriving city-state through sheer grit and child labor, through internal strife, extreme and unpredictable temperature changes, sickness, famine, and isolation. When the apocalypse was on the horizon, we sent scout teams to every corner of the land to rescue as many as we could and rode it out.

What should have been the final deathblow to humanity became nothing more than the opening chapter of the reign of New London, and it would not have been possible without a Captain determined/crazy enough to push through such incredible hardship and convince/coerce people to keep fighting on despite the odds. Everyone in the city for better or worse owed us their life, so we remained in power uncontested, a living legend who guided the survivors of humanity through the great storm.

But in the end, there isn't enough insulation and sawdust soup in the world to chase away the reaper forever. The city survived long enough to outlive us, and now we see the consequences.

1:05 That moment felt like Death itself was talking and was referring to Captain as also being ripe for taking. Perhaps even the city itself. Ambition has caused many downfalls before after all. The tone afterwards during "Merely surviving is not enough" can be interpreted as Death gloating over this destructive ambitiosness of humanity as its taking the Captain.

After watching the whole trailer it felt like it was supposed to be the Steward but I like the idea of that being Death as well.

Wait so is the implication that somebody (possibly the Steward?) rolled the Captain outside and left him to freeze to death?

The world.... let's take it back!

But how...?

They can call me a monster, a hero, a saint or a sinner. It does not matter to me. The City Survived. That is all that matters.

That they can still draw breath to curse me or praise me is thanks enough. That they will wail or cheer when I pass, is all the honor I need.

For me, my time draws to a close. Wheel me out so that the cold may finally take its prize. I am ready. The City no longer needs a Captain to steer it through the storm.

For you, Steward? Your work is just beginning. And I pray that you too will have the heart to do what is necessary when the time comes.

The City Must Survive, Steward. The City Must Endure. Always remember that.

In my head cannon, the people built my captain a statue.
He (I) deserves a statue after not having a single death during the first game.

"Dear, oh dear. What was it?
The city? The oil? Or the horrible parliament? Oh, it doesn't matter...
It always comes down to the Captain's helper to clean up after these sort of messes. Tonight, Captain joins the hunt..."

11 bit making the captain slump in gamer posture is an amazing allusion to how we play frostpunk (locked in)
