Do you have to train to failure to build muscle as a man over 40? You are not a young man anymore, which means the way you worked out in your 20’s might not be as effective as you are in your 40’s. You have to build muscle differently now, and there are many different ways to do that as a man over 40. As you get older, if you are training to failure, you are going to have a higher risk of injuring yourself. Your ability to recover from your workouts slows down over time, and testosterone and growth hormone levels may be lower. You want to workout smarter, not harder if you are a man over 40 trying to build muscle.

Listen to your body, if it is hurting take a break, don’t push through it. Fighting through pain is not a good idea when it comes to building muscle as an older guy. There is a difference between feeling the burn in a good workout, and actually being in pain from pushing too hard. Know your body and know your limits when you are trying to build muscle as an older man.

Another huge key for building muscle is TIME UNDER TENSION. This is the optimal way to build more muscle from your workouts. Aim for a higher rep range and use lighter weights in your workouts. There may be a time when you should push yourself to failure, but that depends on your starting point and your workout history. Changing exercise techniques can also spark muscle growth. When your goal is to build muscle as opposed to strength, you want to aim for the 10-12 rep range for your exercises. Going to failure is safer at higher rep ranges and less weight. That is safer for your joints and central nervous system. You don’t want to train to failure consistently, maybe do it for 4-6 weeks at a time.

Alright guys, that wraps up this video tutorial on do you need to train to failure to build muscle as a man over 40. Make sure to subscribe to our channel for more videos on how to build muscle and get back in shape from home this summer.

Let's get down to brass tacks here... After 40, do you need to train to failure to build muscle... What is the point of training to failure anyway? I lay down the answer in today's new video!

I'm 67 and have been lifting light weights for years. Six months ago I decided I needed to look much more muscular. I found I have to go slow or I'll wake up with some major stiffness in the morning. Gotta be patient and careful when you want to be a buff old geezer.

This is not revolutionary info.
All these guys are saying the same thing. Diversify your training in all aspects… variety of exercises, amount of weight used, reps, sets, techniques, rest between sets, rest between workouts, time off, nutrition, sleep, etc., etc., etc.
The main thing is to learn what works for your body. There are no hard and fast rules…just generalities.

I’m 68 and getting fit. Great to know that lighter/higher reps is the way to go. My body told me this, but I don’t “listen" very well. Looking forward to the future, thanks Gary!

Thanks Gary. I was feeling guilty for not pushing it harder. It seems I was doing pretty much what you recommended.💪

As a 63 year old who is still working out, trying to work off the little "gut" that I have, I certainly appreciate all the sharing of your knowledge, you and all the Live Anabolic guys, with us "common folk." Hahaha. I've been able to work out around a nagging left shoulder injury (pulled something in my left shoulder doing lat raises w/ 40 Lbs. DB's...dummy). I've worked back up to lat raises with 20 Lbs. DB's, and after not being able to bench at all, have worked up to benching 175 Lbs. It bothers me to do a standing military press with a free BB, on the Smith Machine, no so bad. If I feel I've "aggravated it" by going to heavy, I back off a little on the weight and that seems to work...then I work my way back up in weight gradually. Anyway, thanks for everything.

Thx for the info. From the emails to HERE. Love the shared knowledge. And Yes! Am seeing results. Kinda uncanny to see new muscle growth on my aged Body. But am not giving up, just relearning to be patient. It's paying off in the mirror

Very helpful. How many sets of each exercise should we go to Failure on?
Also are TriCon Sets a good option for someone over 60 to add variety? Like 3 - 4 weeks of going to failure, then 3 - 4 weeks of TriCon Sets, then maybe 3 - 4 weeks of SuperSets, then repeat, etc?

66 and training to failure with resistance bands (loop or tube depending on exercises). Have more muscular development and feel better than I ever did with iron. Using a prescription testosterone replacement gel to increase my formerly low level of total testosterone.

Hello how you doing, I am 51 old school military. I just recently started working out again in order to lose weight and yeah probably tone up some. My question is how do I determine what amount of weight should I be lifting. Right now I'm starting from sore to get the body used to working out, but I've had two or three consecutive week of pulled muscles and I'm trying to avoid that.
