All of my Self Portraits since 10

I enjoy doing a self portrait every now and then, usually one a year. It’s a fun break for me to step away from landscapes. Doing a self portrait doubles as a readily available sitter, offering to study portrait painting from life, without having to worry about politely telling them to fix the pose or wait for them to take a break. But at this point it’s fun to look back at the progress, so I thought I’d put this together.

Things were pretty rough early on. I wish I could find something from 15 or 16 but it skips right from being a freshman to a senior. That 20 year old portrait was done right before I entered a traditional art atelier and began seriously learning to draw. I thought using more paint automatically makes you paint like Sargent. Yikes. 24 it was the pandemic and I, too, decided to shave my head. There are pencil drawings, oil paintings, but 17 and one from 24 were digital paintings done in photoshop. At 22 I think I was looking at a lot of Mariano Fortuny and trying to figure out how to use watercolors. The last self portrait is the first one done en plein air, outside. Happy with how it turned out but now I can file it away with the others. Turning 27 in a few months

One of your portraits reminds me of something I did in college. I wasn't an art major so it was the only drawing class I could take The professor didn't like it because it was "too traditional" In other words it was crazy enough for her. I'm almost 70 and don't have an opportunity to take classes. I've always wondered where I would've gone with that if I had a decent teacher. The moral of the story is don't listen to people keep trying.

Not sure if it was an intentional avoidance of drawing eyes by drawing glasses for the 13yo one (I did that growing up drawing self-portraits), but even if so, good on you to make yourself draw eyes again on the next one for self-improvement.

That level up jump from 14 to 17 is amazing!

Awesome! 21 and 22 are my favorite tho 26 is good too, technically 26 is a step up from 21 but I like the sketchy look of 21 more

10 year old Patrick looks older than even now 😂

Nice progress. I have kept none of my art and my progress has stagnated after high-school. 😢

I actually loved your pictures from 10-14 years old. They seem to be the funny and silly side of you. So, what happened?😂😂😂
