Scientists tend to be careful and resistant to big claims. So evidence for the possible end of the living world took a while to be seen as such. In this episode of Crash Course History of Science, Hank talks to us about where Climate Science started and how it works today.

This is a note to say that we presented the research and subsequent burying of the research of Tyrone Hayes in a simplified manner, which made it a bad example to illustrate the point we were trying to make, so we've removed it from the video. Thanks to everyone who pointed it out, we really appreciate it.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again since it’s Earth Day, Crash Course Earth Science would be an amazing series!

Actually, that isn't the Blue Marble photo that was taken in 1972. The photo taken during Apollo 17 had Africa visible, not North America.

Wait... wasn’t Blue Marble the one with Africa in the middle?

I had always heard that the Anthropocene began with farming. For that, we could track pottery (or possibly chickens).

No mention of Svante Arrhenius, who predicted climate change due to the greenhouse effect even before the year 1900?

I take George Carlin's standpoint. The Earth isn't screwed or dying. It's been around for 4 billion years and has recovered from many mass extinctions and awful events. It's designed to evolve, filter and recover itself in a few million years which is a short time frame compared to what it's already experienced. The planet isn't screwed...WE'RE SCREWED.

Pinning 7:20 for my personal future reference "creating doubt about science that was not doubted" The capitalscene, indeed. And unintentionally sowing further the seeds of doubt in many areas?
