You're bang on there Will ;).
It's not easy sometimes to get them 4 at the time, but that's the beauty of photography.
People think it's so simple, all you have to do is press the shutter... Well, they're so wrong ;).

I really like the way you break down what makes a good picture. A bit back I came to the conclusion that great photos required a good Subject, good Light...and just being there.

Your video comes at the right time ! I rented a 10-24 mm lens to try (I have a APS-C sensor). I struggled a lot to make a good composition and back home I was so disappointed with my pictures! But it was because 2 pillars were missing : good subject and light ! your video make me realize that I need to select more wisely the subject and the lights conditions. But I enjoyed a good time in nature and I practiced ! :-)

Spot on...nothing proved this more to me than the past weekend. Using Basemaps, Windy and Photographers Ephemeris I found a location near Wyndham where I believed I would get a good view of the sunrise over some hills in the distance. I had never been there before. Got up at 4:15am, drove to the location only to discover the road that led to the 'view' was gated off and private land. I drove further down the road and using Photopills I knew where the sun would come up but essentially composed a photo in a completely unknown location, in the dark. This didn't work. With the first two pillars pretty much blind to me it was pretty much a lost cause. By the time I realised this, it was too late to move on. Lesson learned, I could salvage something with the light and processing but all in all not what I was looking for. Still nice to be out with only the sheep and the birds as the sun came up. Another cool video William..excellent tips. John Pouw, Invercargill.

Ever so true. I've destroyed a lot of beautiful light in post... lol I've often returned to .raw files even a decade old, started from scratch in PS and made dramatic improvements in my presentation of a particular subject. There've also been plenty of times when I can "see" the composition but shot it in lighting that was less than inspiring. One simply can't force such an image without befitting lighting, though, and those are the occasions when I might bring back cards full of files that are likely never to be touched. Recognizing the keys to each of these four points is always part of the game and it can be easy to get tunnel-vision when shooting, losing sight of one or more of these points.

The are excellent points, indeed, and it's a process that one always seeks to improve. As always, thanks for sharing!

Watching this I agree.
When I take photos I say to myself “ that photo can be better how can I get it to look better “.

Great analysis! I was thinking there needs to be one more pillar - time or timing. But then I thought that is incorporated in your pillar Light. Also dedication is connected to time and light. I´ve heard people say about some of my images"I could have taken that photo". Yeah, but you didn´t! Because you were in bed or sitting in your sofa with a beer 😅

Weird, I can look at other peoples work and immediately diagnose and problems, but not with my own. Actually I often see people using light as a bit of a crutch. I do study great photographers to compare post but that sometimes gets me down 🤣 I also do have to accept my limits but that ok 🙂
