I have more then 60 years of riding rough country, hills that the rear end just slides down while all control is in the front end. I lean forward, trying to get my weight on the front legs only while the back legs slide down the hill.
Climbing the front legs are bent, the toes are digging in but the legs never straight up so I lean back putting my weight on the driving hind end
The US. cavalry did it this way. Experience has taught me to do it that way
The examples given are not really steep slopes where it is important on rider position but the theory is correct
99% of people get it wrong, Nice to see someone who knows
Thanks

As part of my ride training we go up and down hills that are at a 115 degree angle, very steep and once up top, menacing to look down the hill, but in the end it is a bumpy ride, but pretty fun. My favorite training sessions are ones like that, it’s exiting instead of tiring arena riding.

This is a great video. I’m wondering how difficult it would be to ride a horse up marble steps? I saw it on GoT and was jus curious.
Thanks

Congratulations. It is rare for someone to ride in this way on the downhill.and the arguments are wonderful. Of course I support a little longer with the reins all in proportion to the slope of the downhill. ΑgainCongratulations

In my experience, I have never had a horse choke while eating with his bit. I have no "respect" issues with my horse so I feel no need to manipulate his basic need to eat. I ride 50 miles in one day, I NEED my horse to eat in trail. And I am happy to say now I am riding him bitless, so he can eat with wreck less abandon!

May I ask what saddle you are riding in? Im looking for a good quality endurance type saddle with no horn. Thanks!

What? Really! What you have ridden are not very steep! I think a horse needs their rider to be at their point of balance - whether going up hill or down. I once rode my horse down a wet and slippery hill. I was committed before I realised how steep and slippery it was! Anyway, my horse planted all four feet and skied down the hill. I had to stay right on his point of balance, or he would have come down. It was a fine balance too! Made me realise just how important it is for the rider to stay over the horses point of balance on hills.

This is exactly how NOT to ride a horse downhill.

Why you allowing your to eat? first when your on it is a sign of disrespect. when he has a bit in which is a choking hazard.

thanks for a very helpful video. i've been wanting to develop my mare's back and have started some hill work. now i can see a better way ride her. i'm wondering though when we're going down hill, should i let her stretch her neck down or support her more with the reins?
