Palate / roof / open mouth whistle tutorial

This is a whistle I've been practicing for maybe two months at the time I made this. It's a really unique whistle that can lead to many fun variations, which I'll get into more depth later on.

I think I still have many things to learn about this whistling style, but I wanted to try and teach the basics to you so you can also have fun with it :)

I only know of one other palate whistling tutorial, and if you want to learn this whistle, I recommend you go see it:

How to whistle 11 : The palatal whistling style (smiling style)

I also have a short video/vlog series about my progress here:

finally got it! tip at 4:32 with the paper was really helpful. I got sidetracked by making a whistle sound that was actually coming from my lower teeth or something like that, the paper technique helped me make sure the sound I'm making is coming from the tongue. The sound is really weak right now but I think all I need to do is keep practicing for it to become clearer

Came naturally for me, I love it because I can whistle without moving my mouth and everyone is looking around trying to figure out where It's coming from.
I just look at them, smile, and over exaggerate my breaths between the whistling. They usually realize It's me after that.

Also for anyone having trouble, spread your tongue out to the sides so you can feel your top set of teeth on both sides with the edges of your tongue (You should feel it up against most of your teeth that are behind your canines.) After that lightly bring your bottom teeth up until there's pressure on your tongue. Just not to the point it hurts, you're not biting your tongue, you're just holding it's sides between your teeth. Your tongue does have to be placed in the right position though, so if It's not working try pushing your tongue forwards/backwards until it works. (It's important that your tongue should never touch your front teeth. If it is you need to bring it back some more.)

I think the M method he used is kinda irrelevant since you can't really control the tip of your tongue and it just sits where it sits with this whistle method. You most likely won't even notice the end of your tongue touching the roof of your mouth, so I wouldn't focus on that.

Once you get used to that you'll get the feel for it and know when to adjust your tongue and apply or relieve pressure against it for certain notes.

Never knew this existed.

Was laying in bed and randomly out of nowhere noticed the indent in the roof of the mouth and thought...

"I wonder if I can use that to whistle."

And tried and was surprised then immediately googled it to figure out if it's a commonly used type of whistling.

Lol I've been whistling like this since I was about 6 or so, didn't even occur to me that some would find it so difficult since its the only one I've ever been able to do... Got basically perfect pitch control with it

I don’t know how to do the M shape of my tongue

This tech can be very challenging, and certainly took me a lot of time to get it working. I'll share some hints that work for me. Don't force the M shape. If you can't do it like shown in video, don't worry, you still might get it inside your mouth against upper teeth and palate. Focus at back/middle part of tongue, keep it close to palate and press it lightly (at sides) against upper teeth. Don't force the tongue against palate and upper teeth. Keep the gap between upper and lower teeth at 5mm - 10mm. Again, keep tongue pretty lightly in place. Avoid hissing sounds that saying S makes. In other words, don't try to say S. Tongue tip should be kind of "floating" behind upper teeth, but in a way that it won't create too much hiss. At first you should focus to back/middle part of tongue, and let the tip be where it wants. Tip finds its place while you practice. These are pretty general tips, but I know many might struggle with this technique, so all info may be useful.

thanks so much mika! I was learning this sound on and off for the past year but I was watching all the 'ralik whistle tutorials' so I never came across your tutorial. I pressed on this random video, and found out it the sound was the same as what I had been trying to learn, and I KID YOU NOT I learned this the same night that I watched this video. your explanation clicked and was a lot more thorough than what I would normally expect! thanks so much I feel like I hit the jackpot by finding this haha. much love from Australia

What is the hole in the middle of the tongue?
How to make this hole?

Hi, I know it's been some years so you might not be able to respond, but I have some questions about the tongue position you mentioned, the M.
How hard do you have to try to make the M shape? Is it fairly natural or did you have to put a lot of effort in? When I try, I have to tense my tongue a lot and it tires out quickly.
Also, do you find that that M shape is necessary, or it's what works best for you but other shapes can work
