It is scary how many people in these comments lack the critical thinking to read into the lyrics. He's not criticizing fat people, he's criticizing how it's virtually impossible to avoid eating crap in the USA.

Welles wakes up every day and thinks "What massive social issue can I parody and call out in 2 minutes today?"
Well done. The processed food to medical debt pipeline is a monster.

I love how the dumb people are saying the song is going to far instead listening to the lyrics. He is saying is "your own damn fault" but he is using it as sarcasm. Just like doctors told us long ago that cigarettes were okay, they also say that real sugar was the enemy to get the bio engineered stuff on the table.

"They[Coca-Cola] did a self investigation like a Florida sheriff station, so you know they wont be found at fault." Damn.

Whoah.. I just listened 10 times in a row in disbelief. You captured in a song how I’ve felt my entire life, battling my weight, surviving multiple eating disorders, trying every diet on earth, exercising until I collapsed. The culture of shame is so strong in the U.S. that an intelligent conversation about health and weight is impossible, including with doctors. The company’s profiting off our demise orchestrate a society where we blame the individual and bully others for entertainment. That way we’re too ashamed and distracted to ever look closely at the people making our food, medicines, etc.

I’ve been searching all my life for this song and I’m very grateful to the algorithm tonight for bringing me here. Please keep writing songs, you’re extremely talented and very intelligent.

As a fat bastard, I appreciate this message. It is your own fault, but you had so much help to get there. In the same way casinos and others exploit the negative tendencies of gambling addicts, others exploit the self destructive tendencies of chronic overeaters.

The fat shaming in the comments is insane considering the message of the song does not seem to be about fat people at all, but rather mega corporations who do their best to engineer things that are incredibly addictive and extremely bad for you.

Why would he spend so much time talking about the companies and the ingredients, and "self-investigations, " if the message was actually about self control.

One last point that people are letting fly over their heads... Cigarette companies would use the claim that doctors recommend smoking "healthy brands." One such brand was Camel, and they used this slogan to sell them: "More doctors smoke Camels than any other brand." And it took us years to do anything about it legally.

In my opinion, the true message of this song is that we need to stop shaming fat people, and start targeting sinister corporations that put absolute garbage in our food with no repercussions. Take some legal action, folks. Jesse Welles has not punched down so far, why would he start now?

“Be careful with irony, son, because most folks don’t know what it is and they won’t understand.”

Wow people are really thick. Shocked at how many people completely misunderstood the meaning of this song.

'All the food on the shelf was engineered for your health, so you're gonna have to take the blame'. This is a brilliant song.

Man’s is a creative genius. Simple melody containing pure gold lyrics. I don’t typically fall into the folky country type genres but every single one of these songs are gold. I await your next post with anticipation!

Every song you write has a great blend of sarcasm/cynicism/realism while touching on topics people generally don't like to discuss.

Everytime I see an upload, I know its going to be something thought provoking.

I think its really cool that you prioritize art over marketability.

I've only just discovered this guy. Somebody shared United Health. Lyrics, guitaring (the riffs in his cover of Fortunate Sons) & tidy vocals are impressive. The lyrics alone are enough to love him. The man's a poet with a big heart

I went to the barber today and we got to talkin about music. I told him I liked early 90s alternative/grunge but I’m also a Dylan fan. He said well you’ve got to hear this dude I came across last week. I already knew he was going to bust out some Jesse Welles. I said I’m one step ahead of ya brother. I’ve been listening to him for a few weeks now lol. You’re buzzin man. You’re about to blow up big time.

The world needs a Jesse Welles album as soon as possible! I can't stop listening to War Isn't Murder. I understand why comments are turned off on that video but let me say it's such an amazing song! It has touched me in a way that no other song ever has and I think the whole world needs to hear it. I've been showing everyone I know. Getting the good word out. Thank you for all this amazing music! We need this right now.

please for the love of god this song is not about shaming fat people and no one is trying to cancel him. he's talking about how obesity isnt a personal moral failure but a result of the fact that most if not all of the food that poor people can afford is overprocessed and engineered to keep people buying more of it instead of to actually be healthy, and how the beauty/diet industry works to shame and isolate fat people instead of actually helping them or just like leaving them alone.

This is brilliant, the sarcastic point of view of corporations and the lies they feed Americans. Just incredible
