I can see the vision here. The Buu saga becomes such a narrative failure eventually, but imagine a world where Gohan really stepped into his role and the Buu saga acted as an epilogue to Dragonball of sorts where Goku and Vegeta got to rest having successfully completed their character arcs and passed the torch.

From this opening you can tell Gohan was meant to take over as the hero, but everyone liked the Goku Vegeta duo waaay more. They bring Vegeta back, they fuse into Gogeta, everyone on earth gets blown up but them, they fight kid boo together. Fast forward, we get Super, while Gohan becomes the shadow of who he once was, so sad. They really did him dirty.
