In my many playthroughs of Mass Effect, it never occurred to me that you can reject Garrus as a crewmate on the Normandy… until recently. But yes, Garrus is one of two optional companions in the first Mass Effect game with the other being Urdnot Wrex.

Let’s explore what happens when there is a Shepard without Vakarrian. After retrieving evidence of Saren’s cooperation with the Geth, Garrus will be waiting for us near the C-Sec elevator if we haven’t recruited him already.

Other than his obvious absence during missions and squad banter, failing to recruit Garrus can have an impact on the Virmire mission, interestingly enough. If you haven’t recruited Garrus AND Liara before Virmire, then Wrex will automatically stand down during his legendary confrontation with Shepard.

If you finish Mass Effect without recruiting Garrus, you will also unlock a few lines of unique dialogue during the Archangel recruitment mission in Mass Effect 2.
