I learned counterpoint from doing the exercises in Paul Hindemith's Craft of Musical Composition Part 2. I learned how to write a fugue by reading The Study of Fugue by Fux. None of this is taught at institutions of higher learning here in Australia. YouTube University is now a much better option than traditional tertiary education. It's also free.

We need to teach melody, and expand and update the definition of melody

Melody means there is musical intent, implied harmonic momentum, articulate emotive expression, and an engaged consciousness to follow it

All music has melody, even music that seems or tries to be anti melodic

We may make students AWARE of melody in nondual metaphysical terms

Once they understand they are always making melody, they may become aware of their intent, consequence, expression, and self-relation to their creation

Hope this makes sense

Want to both integrate and transcend the “artisan” mode of creating

The thing I find is neglected in the teaching of composition (and music in general) is how to listen.

All composers should be very competent on piano, know how to read scores (while internally hearing what you see), write at the piano and stay away from music writing programs for several years, etc etc. Theory-wise, personally, I found Karg-Elert's Polarity Theory to be immensely helpful.
