To be fair both DS and 3ds servers were up for about a decade. I mean it's a shame, but people hacking the 3ds GTS is probably why it's locked to the app.

Black and White were my favorite multiplayer modes since you could give each other a buff or heal. Scarlet and Violet are second with the union room and helping each other find pokemon and especially with Blueberry academy and playing as your pokemon.
