"Comfortably Numb" is a song by English rock band Pink Floyd from their eleventh album, The Wall (1979). It was released as a single in 1980, with "Hey You" as the B-side. The music was composed by guitarist David Gilmour. The lyrics were written by bassist Roger Waters.

"Comfortably Numb" is one of Pink Floyd's most well-known songs, notable for its two guitar solos. In 2004, it was ranked number 314 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. It was re-ranked number 321 in 2010, and re-ranked number 179 in 2021. In 2005, it became the last song ever performed by Waters, Gilmour, keyboardist Richard Wright, and drummer Nick Mason together. An early version was included on the 2012 Wall "Immersion Box Set". The song was covered by Scissor Sisters with a radically different arrangement, which was a UK top ten hit.

Pink Floyd are an English rock band formed in London in 1965. Gaining an early following as one of the first British psychedelic groups, they were distinguished by their extended compositions, sonic experimentation, philosophical lyrics and elaborate live shows. They became a leading band of the progressive rock genre, cited by some as the greatest progressive rock band of all time.

[Intro]

[Verse 1: Roger Waters]
Hello? (Hello, hello, hello)
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me
Is there anyone home?
Come on (Come on, come on), now
I hear you're feeling down
Well, I can ease your pain
And get you on your feet again
Relax (Relax, relax, relax)
I'll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts?

[Pre-Chorus 1: David Gilmour]
There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move, but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child, I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain, you would not understand
This is not how I am

[Chorus: David Gilmour]
I have become comfortably numb

[Guitar Solo 1]

[Chorus: David Gilmour]
I have become comfortably numb

[Verse 2: Roger Waters]
Okay (Okay, okay, okay)
Just a little pinprick
There'll be no more
But you may feel a little sick
Can you stand up? (Stand up, stand up)
I do believe it's working, good
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on, it's time to go

[Pre-Chorus 2: David Gilmour]
There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move, but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child, I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look, but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown, the dream is gone
[Chorus: David Gilmour]
I have become comfortably numb

[Guitar Solo 2]

I am a Navy VN Vet served on a Navy Gunfire support ship off shore Vietnam 1972/73! On patrol at night after my watch I would smoke 💨 a joint and then listen to Pink Floyd! Trying to find some sanity in what was a waste of life in a useless War! F LBJ!

The depth of this song depends on where you’re on your journey in life and never misses a beat to meet you right there. This song changes with you……ages with you……….grows with you.

My cousin was in a coma in a military hospital with a bullet in his head. I sang this and every Pink Floyd song to him until he came back from the coma. He said he followed my voice through fog until he found me. The power of music.

After a major brain operation I started to listen to this music again, took me back to my early years and made me think about life in a new way.
Now I am 70 I have overcome some difficult times and their music always helps me get me through. So powerful and thought provoking.
So many awful things going on in the world, we all need to slow down and think more.

My dad was a MASSIVE Pink Floyd fan since day one. Comfortably Numb was his favourite. He passed away in June this year aged 75. We played this to him in hospital, even when he was unconscious as he could still hear. The lyrics are so poignant. We played it at his funeral also, as he requested. The second guitar solo piece was his favourite part and he always said ‘Brilliant’ every.single.time. That part always makes me cry. It’s Dads song ♥️

I lost a cousin today, a wonderful person, a good loving dad; he fought a long anguish battle against his own body, until the last breath he held his wife's hand. I could only come to this song, only Pink Floyd could ease my feelings.

Fuck cancer

I had a kidney transplant last year and my Dad died 6 months later. I played Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here at his funeral. Comfortably Numb is my coping song for everything

I believed that if Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Paganini, et al. were somehow given a preview of this future of music, and other Pink Floyd masterpieces, they would wholeheartedly approve.

When I was in med school this song helped me make it through some of the toughest times including the death of my wife from cancer. By the time I graduated I had become so numb to pain and death that I was able to do my job without crying over how much the patient was suffering. To someone that does not understand I can not explain how important it is to not feel so much empathy that you can not do your job.

I was a ludapata for 3 years in my life, whenever I came home alone, depressed and immersed in misery I listened to that song and cried non-stop, now I listen to this song and I remember that stage of my life that was difficult but I have already overcome it and remains in memories with this song

This song was on the radio as my dad took his last dog to be put down.
It still makes him tear up.
This is nearly 25 years later.
