Treatment for Stage Zero Breast Cancer

Показать описание
Dr. Jay K. Harness explains what stage zero breast cancer is and gives an overview of stage zero breast cancer treatment options. If you've been diagnosed with stage zero breast cancer, watch this video to learn more about potential treatments.
In this clip, Jay Harness, MD, FACS explains what Stage 0 breast cancer is.
"Stage 0, by definition, is in situ breast cancer. So the treatment certainly involves surgery and certainly involves a removal of the area of the in situ breast cancer. This can be done by a lumpectomy, or some patients actually choose mastectomy.
The mastectomy would be completely curative and no additional treatment would be needed. However, if a patient chooses a lumpectomy or the medical term for that is 'partial mastectomy', then typically other adjunctive treatments are needed. The most common of which is radiation therapy to the breast.
And then also, we may use anti-estrogen medications, anti-estrogen pills -- depending on the size of the in situ breast cancer. The bottom line is that the treatment of in situ breast cancer is a local treatment. We don't have to treat the whole body."
