💬 Recently Steam has banned some games for using generative AI.
Does that apply to every type of AI? Art, text, code, music?
I've used ChatGPT to brainstorm ideas for my game Dinky Guardians, is that a problem?
Adobe also made a very interesting new update and hopefully the upcoming Unity AI tools will follow in those footsteps.

github does not own "billions" of lines of code. They trained the AI on the code you store in their servers. Steam is simply being cautious: The number of lawsuits regarding infringing on IP because AI trained on images and text that was never specifically authorized to be used to train AI to then allow someone ELSE to make a profit is growing rapidly.
Steam simply (understandable) doesn't want to be caught in the middle so they're pushing it aside until it's solved by courts by/on someone else.

Regarding adobe: They're freaking rich as heck and can afford the likely small and fairly cheap cases that will arise from its product. MOST companies however will not be in that position to basically go "hey we know youy're stealing from someone with our tools, here's the money you lost as a result"

This isn't really about AI... or AI training... this is just about basic copyright infringement. He didn't use AI to create art, he used AI to modify copyrighted art and it was obvious what the original art was. This isn't a great AI debate, this is more like using photoshop to add a filter to someone else's copyrighted art and then sell it as your own.

I use AI to generate concept art and textures that I can use for my game, the textures I dont rip straight from the AI but I get what a texture might look like and then just recreate it myself. I hope that is alright with valve. If I create my art just from concept from AI that should be fine

AI Does Not Infringe Copyright!! That is NOT how AI works. Recently many countries around the world have been rapidly pushing that AI generated content is free use and does belong to anyone. If AI infringes copyright, so do your eyeballs whenever you look at something someone else made, and use the ideas to make your own. Ai does not USE copyright material, it merely studies and learns an algorithm that happens to make similar things. It if, by definition, plenty deep into what is legally referred to as "transformative artwork".

I doubt Steam really wants to go down the route of trying to arbitrate which games are using AI art, unless they plan on hiring many more staff for a reason which won't improve profits.

When copilot came out there was a lot of concern over the use of GPL code being used in the training data, and since text generation is quite a bit more prone to regurgitating 1:1 there's a somewhat real issue of laundering GPL code into proprietary codebases. I don't know if they fixed that or not.

This doesnt even make sense. If i made art and took inspiration from another artists its not theft. but if AI does it, it is? Why. If its transformative it shouldn't matter.

Man this blows. As a wannabe solo developer I thought that I can save time and money and produce games more quickly. Now I have to draw everything by myself which costs double the time. No money to hire an artist

Pretending AI training datasets should be fully owned and not just publicly available, it's literally as stupid as pretending that a professional in any field has only trained with fully owned material and not publicly available. As long as the AI doesn't spit 1:1 results, the line for AI copyright infringement should be no different than the line for people's copyright infringements.-

Don't human intelligence rely on learning and inspiration that comes from both noncopyright and copyrighted materials?

As far as I know, human brain does not create from nothing on its own, it rely on things that it already knows which comes from the outside world which could be both noncopyright or copyrighted materials 🤷

How can i proove that asset is mine? Draw the same thing on cam or what? The thing that i'm using in game didn't existed untill I've used it, what else do they need?

I created art and trained my own datasets, but I didn't only do it for art, I did it for AI NPCS, weather and wildlife, not to mention I trained a dataset to be used in an AI security and an anti-cheat module.

I am working hard on a new project, but I own almost everything, all the art, 3d models, and the storylines.

Potentially meritable lawsuits. Some AI content I've made just plagiarized full chunks of copyrighted work.

I mean, this whole thing is quite simple to solve. AI can't own property, therefore AI created content should not be used commercially or at least copyrighted at all.
If any AI created assets are free use, the problem just goes away, and the amount of free assets increases dramatically.

Are they banning all AI content, or just that which does not qualify as "minimally creative"?
Why do I need to prove if I own AI database or not, if the resulting image itself is mine?

Heh, I've seen this kind of thing before. Anytime new tech comes out it takes lawyers about 3 to 5 years to catch up. 😊

I say this is a good way to protect people who actually make stuff ie:- artists who actually spend time in making art and design, rather someone just getting stuff from ai model who is generating those art and design through data set they own.
This will force openAi to make tech who actually require data set like art they own, design they own, music they own and then let ai to make permutation and combination on those data sets(one can hope right).

The issue definitely isn't AI (unless Steam is biased towards better known devs/studios), Silica has an intro with a slideshow of AI generated images to explain the world setting (which is likely just a placeholder anyway for now) and it's perfectly fine, the main issue here seems to be that he used specific art as a basis instead of generating something freely

Generally I agree with all the decisions Gabe Newell has made regarding Steam, and my opinion does not change here. Good job, Valve.

I keep saying this: i got really nothing against AI but I'm not excited about it either, to me its just a tool and as with every tool it depends entirely on how it is being used, sadly and knowing human nature of always following the path of least resistance of course people will give it a "get-rich-quick" type of use.

On game development i would love to have an integrated AI system that generates levels on the fly, that would be perfect for endless type of gameplay modes (also you could fit an "entire world" in only the size of your assets + the size of your AI script which could be ultra low depending on your hame) but for an actual game (with start and finish) yeah it would be beyond lazy.

My take on this: Valve is based
