You can’t win a war in Italy.

You capture a town, some guy introduces you to his beautiful daughter, his wife feeds you a fabulous meal, and four years later you’re working in his bakery, have two kids, and speak fluent Italian.

Fun fact. Many Italians were taken prisoner and shipped to Australia to work the fields on the farms vacated by the aussies who’d enlisted. Most not only stayed in Australia but promptly shipped their family over in 1944-46 after Italy left the war.

The Italian troops did not agree with the war. They were not cowards. They were refusing legaly to fight in a war they did not want to ne involved in.

Italian prisoners of war held in beautiful Southern Rhodesia during World War 2 were so grateful at the way they were treated that they built a small church there as a thank you.

Italian armi went many years in Albania during the ww2 but never harmed albanian people, and when germans came at 1944 after the capitulation of Italy, they were very angry with italians and looking everywhere for them.
But Albanias defended and hides ours brothers, because a population never forget what you did to them, in bed or in good, and ITALIANS soldiers never did something wrong in Albania.
They built roads and bridges of friendship.
Just love for Italians from Albania

Mussolini was never able to generate the almost fanatic support in the general population that Hitler did. As one result, baring notable exceptions, much of the Italian military simply did not have total dedication to win at any cost.

I remember my Grandad’s friends fought in Africa against the Italians and they said they fought harder than the Germans but were letdown by the equipment and senior officers

I knew a man that was an MP guarding Italian prisoners out west, he said they were friendly for the most part and worked hard and spent the money they were paid on ingredients for Italian dishes.
They would say "hey joe, are you hungry?"
The guards in the towers would lower pails down and the italians would fill them with pasta dishes and bread, they were very happy to be out of the war and were definitely better off than their loved one back

In Russia, people of the village praied to be occupied by italian instead of Wehrmacht. People ran to italian soldier to offer their dacia, scaried of germans.
They knew the differences.

They fought bravely when they had to, but for the most part they didn't think it was their war but Mussolini's. This was especially true after he declared war on the U.S.

The Italians certainly could fight, they just didn't want to. Civilised.

There were examples of them fighting strongly too. The country wasn't remotely ready for war, economically or militarily. Tanks were crap; planes crap. Very little fuel for their navy, which was actually decent.

Coming from a grandson of an Italian soldier, i was told the italians disliked the germans and austrians more than the British. The beef with england and france was that they wouldnt let italy have a colonial empire... But the beef with the Germans and austrians was the ownership of the tyrol, and still fresh memories of the isonzo and caporetto, not to mention rome falling to them in antiquity... When Americans entered, it was the absolute end, for every Italian had american emigrated Got it now????

Speaking with an old British army officer he recounted that out on desert recon if he bumped into a German recon unit they would generally meet up, have a chat, and then be on their way. Outside of battles that is.

They didn't want to fight for Mussolini, smart guys.

I Malta, Italians only bombed military targets, and one would usually drop bombs in the sea so that fishermen could go collect the catch to ward off hunger.
When the luftwaffe took over, it was another story ….

What’s worth remembering is that the Italians didn’t want to fight in world war 2, but thanks to them having a leader in charge at the time that would’ve had people shot for refusing to fight, they were forced into war

the Italians fought valiantly, with a courage that no one else had in the war, being equipped with means already technologically surpassed in 1941, and they maintained their position in the face of inexorable defeat where even the Germans had retreated, during the second battle of El Alamein.
