a perspective that a lot of people might have not heard of within the homeschool/unschool/travel school narrative is from that of the actual child.

i am someone who never spent a day of my life in a public school, and i was severely stunted in social development. i was very much behind in learning life skills and held to a strict standard. i was kicked out of my childhood home for not fitting that standard.

it can be a wonderful thought to take control of your child’s education, but it’s definitely a dangerous decision to enact. if your kids are currently in school and you remove them from there, what happens to their friends? especially if the decision is made to become nomadic? it’s not a good thing for anyone’s psychology to deny forming stable bonds with people outside of the family. this is how people learn how to interact within a society.

i was moved from co-op to co-op for a couple years before i became homeschooled full time and that messed with me on unbelievable scales. this combined with limited internet/computer access made it feel like i was constantly isolated, and created an anxiety towards change and abandonment.

i’m thankfully out of my childhood situation, but the grief remains for a normal childhood that was robbed from me. i feel stupid a lot of times compared to others, and i have an extremely hard time understanding social cues and making friends, even in adulthood.

i mean no ill intent towards the creators of this channel, nor towards anyone who is curious, but i do feel the need to share my experience with how bad this can be for a child growing up.

granted, i don’t know the full picture, and i hope your kids are happy, but i seriously doubt, given my upbringing, that they are truly flourishing in all aspects, especially in social situations.

I'm more so curious how one affords to do homeschooling. I very much want to, but how do I make sure to have enough money to feed and clothe everyone and purchases for educational adventures?
