Iceland's Lava Tunnel & Power Plant | Volcanic Activity and How it Shapes the Country
Показать описание
Ever wonder how Iceland harnesses the magnificent energy of hot water to power their country? Or how Reykjavik keeps its streets warm even in the middle of a snowstorm? Or maybe you've heard that water in Iceland smells eggy and wonder if it's safe to drink. Come with us as we explore all of these questions on an educational adventure of geothermal activity!
We first explore one of Iceland's must-see underground wonders, the Lava Tunnel. Located about 30 minutes from Reykjavik, the Lava Tunnel seems to be in the middle of nowhere. But slip behind a hidden door in the rocks and you enter a whole new world. Inside the tunnel we learn about the ancient lava flows that have shaped Iceland throughout its existence.
After our experience in the enchanted cave, we warm up in one of Iceland's main geothermal power plants, Hellisheiði. The Hellisheiði plant offers what it calls the "On Power Geothermal Exhibition" where guests can learn about the abundant hot water thousands of feet below Iceland's surface. This hot water is used to heat homes throughout Iceland, heat streets and to generate electricity. Did you know that Iceland draws 100% of its power from renewable resources? The first country on the planet to do so!
Big thanks to our producing partners for this trip to Iceland, Community Links International. Thanks Jim!
