Explore how geothermal energy— the heat in the Earth’s crust— is being used to create renewable electricity and power.

--

While the weather in Iceland is often cold, wet, and windy, a nearly endless supply of heat bubbles away below the surface. In fact, almost every building in the country is heated by geothermal energy in a process with virtually no carbon emissions. So how exactly does this renewable energy work? Jean-Baptiste P. Koehl explores the two primary models for harnessing the planet's natural heat.

Lesson by Jean-Baptiste P. Koehl, directed by Charlotte Arene.

I remember the shock of getting my first electric bill when I moved from Iceland to mainland Europe. I think I paid more per month there than I did over the whole year back home in Iceland. We sometimes take our *almost* free and clean energy for granted

I was in Iceland two years ago and one of the first things I learned was that around 90% of the country is powered by geothermal energy. I even visited an organic tomato farm where the greenhouses were heated by it and the crops were fully pollinated by imported honeybees.

The bounty of nature is incredible, but human ability to harness nature is yet more mind blowing

I learned about this when I read Game of Thrones and learned that castle Winterfell is actually heated naturally through thermal heat.

This video had some of the nicest animation and music/audio design I've seen in a long time.

I can't help but notice how the words "heat, feet and deep" that the narrator speaks rhymes. They all sound so similar enough that he sounds like he's rappin

I just love how nice and decent everything looks and sounds on paper while we all know that during implications I don't think any businessman will care about ground water pollution or earthquake as long as they profit.

I have so many friends and family that have built geothermal heat pumps that regularly breaking down and costing tens of thousands to fix.
And that doesn't account for the fact that the pumps coat significantly more to set up than a regular furnace.
I wished it worked well, but so far it has been a bust
