As the Black Lives Matter movement spreads internationally, we’re looking today at one of the world’s most forgotten Black communities. In Mexico, Black people make up around one percent of the population.

CGTN's Alasdair Baverstock tells us in the first of two reports, equal rights isn’t the only battle they have on their hands.

I once saw an afro Mexican woman singing our old hymns from the south where she migrated from to escape American persecution. She didn’t speak a lick of English though, but the song had been passed down through her family for generations. Idk it was just so incredible to hear her sing it in our accent, in English, yet she didn’t speak the language.

The fact that Rosa is using a typewriter in this day and age says a lot about the lack of technological resources within their community, as well.

Shows how strong our people are. They fled there and began their lives surviving on what they have.

They are lucky to have that personal solitude away from people who don't like them, sometimes segregation is a luxury which can separate you from the pain of racism, stay away from those demons that hate you for no reason my brother and sisters

I am a black Brazilian, it’s really hard to explain to Americans that Latinos/Hispanic is not race. Every time I tell someone I’m Afro Latino, they think I am from the DR or PR.Its crazy that Americans don’t know that there’s other races in South America, especially since Brazil holds the largest black and Asian population outside of Asia and Africa.

Proud to have come from Afro-Mexicans. Beautiful people. My original ancestors were most likely Africans that were brought to Guerrero. They intermarried with Asians that were brought to Acapulco, Guerrero in the Manila Galleons. After that, they moved to Mexican states like Michoacán, Jalisco, and Guanajuato and intermarried again but this time with the Spaniard and Native population. I used to think I was like the typical Xicano that is only a Spaniard/Native mix. Turns out I'm part black, 1/3rd Portuguese, plus every race imaginable.

Black folks are disrespected all over the world. How can we help? We are Diaspora Africans, and we are strong. Blessings to you all!

Much love to all AfroMexicans💖. Know that you have conscious African descended fam in many other countries that support you, have dedicated time to knowing about you and about others from the diaspora that have been kept hidden. Love from your AfroColombian sister! ✊🏿❤️

And many in this world think it’s a taboo to claim their African side until it helps them in some way.

I remember working on my family history, o told someone my family on my fathers side is from Guatemala and Mexico and they just looked at me like I was crazy. They said I don’t look Mexican because I’m black. We need to educate ourselves and talk more about the history of black people all around the world. Before slavery and after.

I’m a white Mexican. My skin is white and I was born with red hair. One of my grandfather’s grandfather came from Guerrero and he was so dark I suspect he might have been a black native i.e Afro Indigenous, Afro Mexican.
