I was in London a few years ago. Went for a walk early in the morning, walking down Piccadilly when I saw Tom Baker coming towards me. I said Good Morning Mr Baker, I loved you as Rasputin. He gave me a huge grin, said thank you, no one has ever said that to me before😂

I went on a field trip for history class in 1971 to see this movie, when this came out in theaters. I was about 13 years old. I never forgot it, and was kind of traumatized at the ending. An excellent movie, which I hope to see again.

This movie is a masterpiece especially for its time. It has the best portrayal of the Romanovs that I’ve seen. The Nexflix series, The Last Tsars, are complete trash and is a complete disgrace to the Romanovs. They also did a fantastic job at choosing an actor that genuinely looks very much like Nicky.

Many Thanks for uploading this original 35mm 'Scope trailer for the film. It looks far better than the old heavily cropped at the sides pan and scan transfer originally uploaded on YouTube.

RIP Michael Jayston. He played Raquel's father in Only Fools And Horses.

Just imagine how the Russian monarchy could have been regenerated if Nicholas had been told in advance of Father Gapon's march to the Winter Palace, had received him on the balcony in full sight of the crowds, accepted his petition, embraced him, and announced to the people that "a new day is beginning for Russia". This would have been a living fulfillment of the ancient image of the "Batushka Tsar", the Father of his people, and would have taken the wind out of the revolutionairies' sails in one stroke. Most of the reforms that the Russian people wanted were social, rather than political: decent wages and working conditions for the factory workers, the right to land ownership for the peasants (who, even in 1905, were 85% of the population), and free speech and the right to travel freely for the middle class; the Tsar's personal power was not the main issue. What felled the Imperial system was not tyranny as much as deafness and blindness on the part of the upper class. And, ultimately, it was not only the Russian people, but the entire world, that paid -- and is still paying -- the price.

I think we all saw this on a history class field trip! I wish I remembered my history teacher's name.

This is a great movie 🎬, I have been a Romanov buff since I was 16 and read Massie's book "Nicholas and Alexandra" I am 44 now!

The good points, they got the characters right, especially the Romanovs, Kerensky, Rasputin, Kobylinsky and the Bolsheviks.

The bad points, there are a few mistakes like the Prime Minister planning the celebrations of 300 years of Romanov rule in 1913 when he was assassinated 2 years before and towards the end the Imperial family travelling together from Tobolsk to Yekaterinburg when in fact it was Nicholas, Alexandra and their 3rd daughter Maria and the rest followed a few weeks later when Alexei had recovered enough from what turned out to be his last bad attack of Haemophilia after going down the stairs on a sledge out of sheer boredom.

Just so you know I have been to St Petersburg, Moscow, Tobolsk (I have seen the stairs Alexei famously slid down on a sledge!) and Yekaterinburg.

They got the entourage right like doctor Botkin, the French teacher Pierre Gilliard and Alexei's sailor Nagorny too.

One thing is this film was made in 1971 and we know so much more now about what happened in those days and you could put alot of that new information into any new Nicholas and Alexandra film and you could have Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia doing alot more than just looking girly and pretty.

Tatiana never exposed herself to any Bolshevik guard either.

Interesting fact, Lynne Frederick who played Tatiana in the movie 🎬 in real life was famously married to Peter Sellars! I could imagine Anastasia being married to him but not Tatiana.

Tom Baker should have gotten a Best Supporting Actor Award for his portrayal of Rasputin.

I think the best recreation of the bloody execution was in an episode of The Crown
