I've eaten dumpster dive food before when I was living on the road following The Grateful Dead (best cult ever, BTW) and some of it is actually still good and free when you're genuinely hungry! And yep, if you get some food that is rotten you WILL have some useful information on what not to pick next time. It's called learning by experience and it's actually a good skill to have in many aspects of life. He treats people like they don't have the ability to use their own brains to figure stuff out.
