"Women’s brains aren’t wired like that.” That’s what Dr. Stephanie van Willigenburg’s PhD mentor told her whenever she got stuck on a problem. Now she’s a UBC math professor and was just awarded the Krieger-Nelson Prize for outstanding research by a female mathematician. This is her story.

Struggling to resist the temptation to look up who her PhD advisor was. One hopes that he kicked free of his bias before torpedoing other careers. Wondering how academia can practically detect and prevent negative mentoring.
