I am Telugu and normally can't understand spoken Malayalam, but when they spell it out in English, I can actually see SOOOO many similarities with Telugu, and the grammar is basically the same. If we learn some of the variants of the same words, I think it should be easy to learn each other's languages. For instance, I just picked up the following similarities from this video:

Hello: Namaskaaram (same)
You: Ningal = Nuvvu
Who: Aaranu - Yevaru
Name: Peru (same)
What: Enthanu = Enti
Where: Evideyanu = Ekkada
There: Avide = Akkada
You're going: Pokkunu = Pothunavu.
Am going: Pokkunu = Pothunanu
Age: Vayasaai = Vayasu
30: Mupathu = Mupayi
Came (me): Vannath = Vochenu
Walk / by foot: Nadannannu = Nadachi
Like = Istamano = Istamu
Love = Snehikunnu = Sneham
How much = Ethra = Entha
Which one = Ethanu = Edhi
Meaning = Ardham (same)

I'm only half way through the video, I'm sure there are many more words.

As a malayali myself, this is actually pretty accurate, but it's really formal- you'd probably see this much formality in malayalam movies, serials or books. but it's still amazing!
