Thirty police officers are currently engaged in a one-week sign language training session in Belize City.  The session is crucial for officers, especially those who are tasked to taking statements from disabled persons.  The training is being coordinated by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Howell Gillett.  According to Gillett, in the line of police work, officers have encountered special needs persons who have been victims of sexual violence and abuse.  With this in mind, he says it is important to be able to communicate clearly with them.
