UDP Deputy Under Fire for Dismissing Sign Language Training for Police Officers
Показать описание
UDP Deputy Chairman, Alberto August, is being criticized tonight after undervaluing the importance of sign language and the benefits of police officers being trained for such. In a social media post today, August commented on the current sign language training of thirty police officers. Whilst expressing appreciation for Assistant Commissioner of Police Howell Gillett, the training coordinator, August asked Gillett, quote, “Sir, do not allow yourself to be used for simpleness. What on earth is this about 30 police persons being trained in sign language? Is it because you too, like the prime minister, believe that we are dumb? Ask yourself Sir: When was the last time the competence of the police was brought into question because they could not sign communicate?” End of quote. According to August, the resources of the Police Department should be put to better use in areas like public relations and communications. President of the Association for Disable Persons, Kenrick Theus, weighed in on the post, saying that he does not agree with August.
August is the Deputy Chairman of the United Democratic Party. It is uncertain if his posts are a reflection of the party’s overall position on issues.
