Yoshi’s New Family Just Wants to Love Him, But He’s Too Scared

Yoshi’s experience in his last home left him shut down in a pretty extreme way. He was adopted by an amazing family who had recently lost their longtime cat family member and were ready to open their hearts again. But 24 hours after his arrival, Yoshi still hasn’t left his carrier and – here’s the scary part – hasn’t eaten either. I was called in to try to help this poor boy see that this time around, he was surrounded by nothing but loving care. But it was an uphill battle with this guy. This level of fear not only has his family worried, but it’s got me worried too…

This felt like your TV show, minus the drama and fast pacing. Would love to see more :)

Yoshi coming out of his shell put me to tears, he reminds me so much of my orange boy, Maki. We took him in knowing he was the shiest in the shelter. I spent weeks working on his anxiety, slowly introducing him to the rest of the house, all its regular noises and happenings, and our senior kitty. It's been three years since bringing him home and he practically runs the house now with his shining confidence!
I owe this all to Jackson for giving me the knowledge needed to ensure my cats are not only living, but thriving. Thank you Jackson Galaxy ❤️

Aww, poor scaredy boy. I had a foster who was very afraid of people. I gave him a week to himself where I would only bring him food and talk to him while I was taking care of his litter box, just to give him time to acclimate to the sounds and smells of his new space. Then I would put his food outside his carrier and sit in a far corner of the room facing the wall until he came out to eat. Six hours the first night. Then I slowly moved the bowl further away, then I sat facing into the room. Slowly I moved closer to his bowl until he realized I was safe. Five months later, he rubbed his cheek against my knee. Within a week, he was all about that cuddle life, but only if he touched me first. Eventually, he would let anyone pet him if they sat on the floor and followed his rules. One year and six days after that frightened boy came to my house, he went to his perfect adoptive family where he has patient, loving humans, a best buddy cat, and a dog that he’s okay with. I shudder to think what might have become of him if he hadn’t come into foster care.

The parallels between this and Rocky Kanaka's Sitting With Dogs are... vibes.
Soft and warm and kind and good 😊

All of your videos about building confidence and ownership of whatever degrees the cat desires has helped me to get my cat to be more open, to be more comfortable with me and with her siblings and to understand how she views the world. When I first brought my babies home three years ago, I had one confident boy, one skittish girl, and a ghost for the first two weeks. Now, she's confident to come up to me with a toy and she knows she won't be bullied out of treats or food and gets her fair share of the cuddles. I couldn't have done it without your videos and show for guidance

Given the traumatic past Yoshi had, I think he's a single-cat housecat. I don't know he'd do well with any other animals. Glad to see him open up.

Omg I had a rescue kitty like this. His first 4 weeks he hid under a bookcase, behind chairs, in closets. I followed your suggestions - a bowl of tuna, I’d sit in a chair in his home base for a little while at a time, reading books to him, singing. Today, he’s a sweet boy who loves affection. He made me work for it, and it’s been worth it!

I’m so happy for Yoshi!

We had a very nervous girl visit us years ago.

We would give her some food and have to retreat to the house before she would come out to eat.

Then she allowed me to sit beside her while she ate, then it was head rubs before she ate and when she had an accident and broke her fore leg, she found her way to our garden and I was able to get her help.

She loved with us for many years after that.

And while she settled into a life of comfort and love, she would sometimes regress to that cautious state and draw away or strike out.

Then she would come around a little later and ask for pets again.

For a semi-wild little cat, she learned to trust people again and her final years were in that carefree yet loving environment.

I adopted an 8 yr old cat that the hoomans were giving up. She came home to me and hid for an entire month, inside my couch.
Food was getting eaten and litterbox was being used so I let her take her own time. We passed our 1 1/2 yrs together ❤️ 🙌 ❤❤
