How to make knife handles (from Brass and Ebony)

I have this kitchen knife that I really like, but the cheap plastic handles were falling apart. I decided to make some new ones from ebony and brass. This was a fun project that was very labor intensive, as I had to shape the handles with hand tools.

I just did a handle replacement for a chef's knife with a big Mesquite branch that fell in my backyard.

Thank you very much! I did something like this once over forty five years ago and have since lost touch. For the past couple of days I've watched a number of videos, none of which really addressed the issue. By watching your video, it all came back to life, and two and a half hours later, my handle is on. It's not perfect as I don't have all the right tools, hence I had to do things slightly different, but it's very close. So all I've got to do now is to fine tune it b sanding her down.

The new handle looks fantastic. Thanks for sharing. Oh, I need to get my drill bits in order too! Would be interesting to see a video of what you come up with if you decide to make a holder/storage for them.

Great job Jeff. This is something I've been meaning to attempt for a while. I've got a really nice Sabatier knife that's got a cracking handle, some idiot (me) put it in the dishwasher.

Sorry to bust on this but, what happens to your hand at 2:43 if your drill catches in the hole and turns you knife blade and drill into a food processor.. You don't ever hold a knife blade with your hand while drilling it, you clamp it securely and keep your hands and everything clear. I know you survived this but someone else might not.

Nice job on the knife I have one I use all the time and it needs the same thing I watched your vid and went looking for some walnut in my wood pile I am going to put that on my to do list I don't have a band saw yet but I do have a big belt sander

Extra holes in the handle of the knife were likely for epoxy / glue adhesion on the original shitty handle. I and lots of other knife makers on Youtube usually drill a considerable number of holes in the handle of a full tang knife for this purpose in addition to slightly larger pin holes (in my case 6mm)

Hi Jeff, Great video. I agree with John Madden re 2:43. At least wear thick leather gloves, please !
Re solvents: I use white spirit (turps) to wipe off most glues. And acetone (nail polish remover) to wipe sticky epoxy from my fingers.
NOTE: Both are not kind to skin, so rub in a dab of hand cream afterwards. This does not mean you are being a sissy, it means you do not have skin problems after 40 years of handymab jobs.

How much is labour and material cost? People throw the knives in dust bins. I have few kitchen knives and feeling lost to fix them. Actually I really wants to fix them cheap!

Quick tip. Use lighter fluid to remove any sticky tape or sticker residue. Wipes right off.
