I agree with you on the "authentic" stuff. A lot of my friends want to go stay at western/american style resorts wherever they go. Sorry, I can get that here in the US...I want to see what the local places and people experience.

Scritches ‘round the world continues! True story: I went to the Oregon Coast yesterday to a tiny marina where they catch and cook clams, crabs, and fish for you. They also have cat condos tucked up under the rain cover. There are six adorable cats that get all the scritches and “leftovers” from every table. It was Heaven.

We also love to find the more low key "local" hangout places to eat or get coffee. We never regret it. We did part of the camino in Spain and stayed in a farmhouse one night that rents rooms. They made the absolute best dinner I had in NW Spain, you could taste the love and care put into the food.

As someone who gets sea sick in a deep bath (with or without water) I’m delighted to see another Brit, both of us from an island of hardy seafarers, who can’t hold onto our lunch (or anything else for that matter, at the mere mention of a ‘sea crossing’. I’ll go into my flight over the Nazca lines in a five seat Cessna some other time!

Don't do the veneers overseas. They had one of those stories on George Takai"s page about a woman's horrific experience in Iran (she was visiting family) getting them done. I wouldn't wish that experience on my worst enemy. Also, a quick philosophical question for you, if you aren't meeting anyone and don't have a train/boat/bus to get to to get back to the hotel, are you ever actually lost when you're traveling? You might wander onto a spectacular area. Very fun video as always. That meal for that little money was amazing. The coffee looked more like hot chocolate than coffee, but looked good anyway. And all the cats!

I don't think I can go to Istanbul...I would never get anywhere because I would just stop to pet every single cat. Then I would want to bring them all home.
