High-Flying Hyundai, Autonomous Apple and Disastrous Dispatches | Fully Charged PLUS

Robert's flying solo in his studio this week and has a great time on his lonesome discussing some emerging news. Hyundai's EV sales are through the roof, which might have been helped by the Ioniq 5. Apple have started making autonomous cars and have hired everyone and their mum to get one on the road by 2025. Plus, there's micro rants about a recent Dispatches episode in there for good measure and more.

Oh Robert I do love your rants! Let's hope the BBC gets to hear about your entirely justified objections to their Panorama programme. I anticipate your appearance on another Panorama to provide the balance that was so clearly lacking! I too have major rants in reaction to such programmes. Sadly there is only my poor wife to hear them 😂

Robert, Absolutely loved the rants and the passion! - one of your best episodes yet. As a very recent EV owner (4- weeks) I am already SO disappointed at how difficult it has been to charge the car. Still awaiting my home charger, already having had to spend £750 upgrading my electrics at home. Chargers that are available don’t work every time. Usually takes at least 15 minutes just to get connected as the apps just don’t want to work! However, loving the EV experience of actually driving. Keep up the good work!

Totally with you on the rants. Fine charging companies that have a charger that does not work. And why is the BBC so biased? Two excellent points.

The Dispateches programme was also annoying in that although they correctly highlighted that batteries shouldn't be left at high or low states of charge for extended periods, they then went on to completely misunderstand this and wrongly state that you should never charge or use over 80% or under 20%, i.e. only use 60% of the published range

Thank you for challenging the cobalt cobblers spouted on Panorama blaming Tesla and Elon Musk for all the ills of the world. Tesla is like many other EV manufacturers moving to LFP batteries that contain no cobalt. The BBC had their focus on the wrong problem and failed to have the broad panoramic vision that you would expect. Really good rant.

Wonderful, wonderful, I love the rants, you don’t loose the detail even then. It’s not just EV’s that the BBC have an unbiased opinion on, it’s about time they understand that’s what News is about, being balanced. Have a great break, look forward to 2022 episodes. The EV industry (especially the Chinese and including some Tesla models) is rapidly pivoting to LFP (lithium/ iron/ phosphate) batteries which use no cobalt at all.

BTW in Germany from my experience using an i3 and I have one no cost card from ADAC (like British RAC) and charging works, hopefully in UK things will improve.

The CONSUMPTION of cobalt (as opposed to its use) in the petrochemical industry is something that has annoyed me for quite a while. I am always being told by 'informed' friends that ICE vehicle do not use cobalt; that it is ONLY used for electric cars (using their mobile phones to tell me that on social media!). Thanks, Robert.
