Sacrifices have to be made, and the ending fantasy shows that even if they'd remained together, nothing much would have really changed.

To be fair, Colm DID try to explain why he didn't want to be friends with Padraic anymore at the beginning, but Padraic's refusal to accept this decision was what escalated this easily avoidable situation. It was an allegory for the Irish Civil War, which also started over nothing.

Rose could’ve stayed on the stupid life boat! If she had stayed on the life boat then Jack who’s whole thing is that he’s good at surviving almost definitely could’ve gotten out alive. He could’ve been one of the people in the water that swam over to another boat for one thing and then reunited with Rose. The scene where Rose jumps out of the boat is dramatic and romantic and honestly my romantic heart loves that scene but the minute the scene is over and they spend the rest of the movie trying to survive I honestly get annoyed. Like…Rose could’ve stayed on the life boat and then Jack could’ve gotten on another boat or because he’s so smart he easily could’ve gotten off in some other way successfully. He could’ve found the door and since Rose would already be on another boat he could’ve used the door for himself. Or maybe they could’ve found a way for both of them to balance the door out. Like she gets on one side and he gets on the other. That way the door wouldn’t flip over and they both live.
