People always feel that Superman is the "real" person and that Clark Kent is the "disguise, " but I think this scene shows that Clark is more real than people think. Superman might have to always appear confident, but Clark can be vulnerable and awkward -- like a Kryptonian trying to fit in with ordinary humans. Thus when Lana accepts and prefers Clark over Superman, I think Clark truly loved and appreciated her for this -- which is why he wanted to go out with her as himself and not Superman.

I liked how Chris Reeve played Clark differently, when he is with Lana. T
here are huge differences in the portrayals between "Smallville" Clark and "Metropolis" Clark.
"Smallville" Clark is more confident and less clumsy (and speaks with a less nasally voice).
