The actual reason why it's 7 is because bluetooth allows up to 7 devices.

I played FIFA 10 with my friends and 7 Controllers. It was pure chaos and one of the best childhood memories I have.

I guess it makes sense that the max is 7, since the lights were numbered, but they could’ve done it in binary and allowed 15 controllers!

"Unless you were really into Hamster Ball" I FEEL SO CALLED OUT RN but thank you for the hit of nostalgia lmao

thought it was 8, due to older games having a max of 8 players and that dual port adapter might be stackable...???

It's also because Bluetooth by default is only able to address 8 devices, 0-7, with 0 being the master device and 1-7 being the slaves. Newer Bluetooth protocols still limit it to 7 by default to maintain backwards compatibility, but also because while current hardware can easily handle more slaves the bandwidth can only be stretched so thin. Beyond 7 slaves you may start to see overhead and performance drops

There was this old colosseum style fighting game with tanks that could have up to 8 players I think, it was awesome

"Well, 15 if you know binary. Pretty underrated counting system if you ask me."

that sure was a clever way to get around the 4 light limit

It was also useful for PS2 backcompat games that used the mutli-tap

Hamsterball was literally my jam as a kid! I would have loved to use 7 controllers if I knew I could

I think it impressive that one of the first consoles that allowed you to connect 8 controllers and play was the Super Nintendo

Well you can get to 9 if they thought the would use three lights and 10 if they use four, and 15 if they used binary

Makes me remember that Little big planet 1. During its development, they tried to originally have more than 4 players in one pod. Man imagine the possibilities if up to 7 (maybe 8 if u could make it happen) in one pod, online or offline couch play.

Huh. I thought it was 6 this whole time. You learn something every day.

We used to play a ton of party games with our friends with 7 players. Joust was really fun, it was like playing old school tag with the move controllers. Bomberman and Worms were another.

I remember playing X-Men the Arcade Game with 6 people back in the day. Good times, sweet nostalgia.
