Big 3 Battle: United Airlines vs Delta Airlines vs American Airlines

American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines are the three largest airlines in the US. And American and Delta are the two largest airlines globally. How have they risen to this position?

The story of their growth is fascinating. All three have origins in the early decades of flying, and all have played a part in the global expansion of aviation, airports, and aircraft development. There has also been plenty of consolidation alongside the competition, boosting their size and reach.

Along the way, there has been a raft of experimentation, alongside numerous other airlines that have failed. These three are, in many cases, built on the remains of the failed airlines. This video will explore this growth, the collaboration, and the mergers that have brought us to the three airlines as we know them today.

Keep in mind that US Airways actually bought out AA. . . they took the better known AA name after the merger and moved HQ to DFW.

This video focused on the history and mergers. It would be nice to have a deep dive comparing their fleets and fleet strategies.

I've flown with Delta and love their services and routes. They have my vote for what I'm flying next if possible

Delta is so punctual, safe and the service is outstanding. That is what I like most about this airline. American Airlines is classy, safe, good service as well. US Airways, when I flew with it, it was punctual, the service good quality as well and well I lived in Charlotte NC, and it is the major airline there. The designs are beautiful of the three. Although there was a quick logo design for Delta before the actual one. I remember the tail had like a flag waving kind of design on the tail. Thought it was pretty.

Over a decade ago I was offered a job as a flight officer at both United and Delta. I picked Delta and haven’t regretted my choice.

Understatement of the week goes to “problems with fatigue and pressurisation”

I think it was actually USAirways that bought American Airlines. And it was America West that bought USAirways prior to that.

Been flying United almost exclusively for ten years. Southwest lost my business when I had to deal with an extremely rude flight attedant and the airline lost my bag on three consecutive flights. United has been smooth sailing.

Since I live right near San Francisco, United is my carrier of choice! It only makes sense due to SFO being one of their hubs.

Just for a quick and dirty, here's a 10 month sample from 2018.

Southwest Airlines – 20% (132, 251, 331 passengers)
Delta Air Lines – 16% (106, 062, 211 passengers)
American Airlines – 15% (99, 857, 863 passengers)
United Airlines – 11% (71, 722, 425 passengers)

I completely disagree: the merger between United and Continental did NOT go smoothly. It was one of the worst mergers in US history.
One could argue that this merger is still going on - 10 years later!

The United merger did not retain the CEO of United... Jeff Smizek the ceo of Continental became the ceo of the new company... I can’t believe these easily found facts could be incorrect

United Airlines is our go to. They've got the best flights out of Denver by far, as it's a hub airport of course!

My favorite airline of choice depends on the route. Overall, my best experience is Alaska.

Delta easily. Only reason is I live near Atlanta so I mean what other airline would I choose?

Correction: The CEO of United Post-Merger was Jeff Smisek, former CEO of Continental.

American was acquired by Usiair, which was acquired by America West. In both cases the owners chose to keep the better known brand name.
