Very High Density: Where Air France Flies Its 472-Seat Boeing 777-300ERs

Air France has 61 passenger Boeing 777s, more than any other subfleet operated by the French carrier. Some 43 of these are 777-300ERs, the first of which was delivered 20 years ago in April 2004. These will eventually be replaced by incoming Airbus A350-1000s.

The SkyTeam member’s -300ERs are in three configurations.

One has a total of 296 seats (very premium), another has 369 seats (medium-level), and the 3rd layout has 472 seats (very leisure-heavy)! The latter is Air France's highest-capacity equipment and up there with the world's highest-capacity 777s. Let’s look at where these jets fly for today’s video!

I've flown the high configuration from BKK to CDG as part of a transfer to JFK (which was on a new a350-900), and while the a350 was more technologically advanced, it didnt feel too different to the some 20 year old 777-300ER. The experience was however very french as I sat at the back of the plane and people would just come to pour themselves drinks and grab cheeses and sandwich bites at the back of the plane while chatting with each other. The seatbelt sign barely ever came on for turbulence and only once when the turbulence was quite heavy on a 14 hour flight. Very interesting experience.

I fly on these every time to Havana in economy in front of the engine. It’s the one thing I love about this configuration seat 12A.

I flew with AF on this type of A/C few years ago from CDG to the Dominical Republic / Punta Cana. We flew Economy Premium, which is OK. Not the best seats (Air France had better 10 years ago), but decent. The issue is that the gate is chaos, as you have 450+ passengers waiting to board, even if one has priority boarding, there is still a lot of people. Unfortunately, the seats we chose were missing a window - but on the other hand, I wanted to sleep, so not the biggest loss. Being a 777, it was noisier than a comparable A350. And of course, being AirFrance, the food was good.

Most likely flew one of these in Nov 2022 to Mauritius. Our gate was more like three adjacent gates. But MUR also handles an Emirates A380 flight.

Probably the cheapest way to pay full fare and get a GE90 engine view 😂

I very frequently take the ORY-PTP or CDG-PTP. Compared to the A350-900 (359 pax) of Air Caraïbes with the Economy 3-4-3 config, the Air France one is even comfy 😂. Also know that with this configs, the round trip in Economy can reach 1300$. Idea, for the next vidéo I think: Long haul routes with the highest wide-bodies seats densities.

Never flown on one of these and thanks for the heads up as I'll avoid them like the plague.

That’s 3 more seats than BA has on its a380. So glad I never had to work on anything in that config.

Nice video! I have flown many times on this configuration between CDG and YUL. Once was on F-GZNN which is one of the 3 77W painted in the SkyTeam livery. The 2 others are F-GZNE (4 class config) and F-GZNT (3 class config).

That would be great a video about Air France 777-300ER 296 seats (4 class) configuration which features La Première (2014). This one mostly fly to AF main destinations from CDG (LAX, SFO, JFK, MIA, IAD, DXB, SIN, HND, GRU) and also to MEX, HKG, BOS, IAH, LAS, ORD… before the A350-900 operates these routes.

Also, I think AF is planning to refurbish their 4 class cabin by 2025 😁

In mid-Sept, I flew from CDG-MRU on a very full AF flight (AF470) on one of the A359’s. It was in my opinion, a terrible experience for the main reason that they pack seats in so tight and the seat pitch makes it very uncomfortable on the back, hard to sleep, and poor legroom.

There have to be health consequences for these extremely packed flights 10+ hour flights.

Flew some years ago from Orly to Martinique on such aircraft with 470 seats! Food and entertainment was good, but the seats were horrible! And 10 in a row of course! Once but never again!

I have flown this variant in business class several times. Boarding this large number of people is always messy, and I have never gotten a flight on time. The service level is the usual, but you will have to wait for the premium economy passengers to disembark from the plane first. Toilets are always overcrowded, but that is also common in the A350.

I used to fly to and from PTP all the time back in the day in economy, we would call it "la bétaillère" or the cattle truck. Good times 😂
