C100/C300 Quick Tip: Using Auto Focus

The Canon C100 and C300 have had One Shot Auto Focus as a factory default feature for some time. As long as users had an auto focus cable lens, auto focus could be activated with an Assign Button. One especially nice feature in this mode is the presence of a white box in frame center; sharp focus is visually confirmed by the box turning green.

Now, Canon has enhanced this feature by offering an upgrade to Dual Pixel AF, which is a continuous focus update feature. In my video above, I will take you through the focus options and how to make the most of them. I'll show how to set them up in the menus and how to apply them to real-world situations with the help of Assign Buttons.

OH my gosh, I was ready to spend $500 on my used C300, thinking that DPAF was not installed. AFter your video, it saved me $500. It already has DPAF!!! Thank you.

The C100 MKII has facial priority lock. You can setup as face priority or facial lock. The box curser follows the face and keeps focus. If the lock is lost, the center focus returns until a face lock can be reestablished. It would have been extremely beneficial if Canon had included a touch screen with touch focus points. I’m happy with the facial auto focus lock that recognizes multiple faces. Given all the other pros of this camera it’s still a win for me. Canon does do some odd things. I have a C100 MKII, Rebel SL2, and 90D.

But why in the center only? Even 7D Mark II can have One Shot AF by selecting the area where we want. For me, C100 Mark II is a big disappointment.

Just got a c100mk2. What AF mode would you recommend for interviews when the subject isn't moving around much? I have it on continuous but I'm afraid it might start focus hunting if talent moves slightly.
