She self-diagnosed with Lipedema.

She felt dismissed, she felt less than, she felt like she was not worth her doctor's time.

We are aware that some of us feel the same way.

We hope you know that you are not alone and that you have an amazing community that supports you.

But the question always is, what is Lipedema?

Lipedema is a relatively common fat disorder often mistaken for simple obesity. Its clinical diagnosis is an adipose tissue disorder or a lipid metabolism disorder. A typical lipedema patient is a woman who struggles with large hips and legs, usually out of proportion to the rest of her body.

Lipedema also appears in the upper arms. One of the hallmarks of the disease is that lipedema fat is relatively unresponsive to standard diet and exercise. These measures may lead to weight loss in other areas, but the size of the hips and legs remains disproportionately large.

Lipedema is a disorder of the adipose tissue distinguished by five characteristics:
☑️ it can be inherited;
☑️ it occurs almost exclusively in women;
☑️ it can occur in women of all sizes, from the seriously underweight to the morbidly obese;
☑️ it involves the excess deposit and expansion of fat cells in an unusual and particular pattern – bilateral, symmetrical, and usually from the waist to a distinct line just above the ankles; and
☑️, unlike the “normal” fat of obesity, lipedemic fat cannot be lost through standard diet and exercise...

You shouldn’t really feel like that because she has immediately sent you to a lipedema specialist!! She probably knows that she doesn’t know much about lipedema and so she didn’t want to speculate. You should be HAPPY that you will immediately see a specialist. COUNT YOUR

Drs hate when you self diagnose bc you’re usually right and that means they missed it. Always with their fragile egos.

I would have been thrilled to not waste time in front of a clueless doctor. One who simply refers you to someone who knows? Sounds perfect

I self diagnosed during my pregnancy and I was right. We have to advocate for our health with these doctors because they treat appointments like a fast food drive through....No, no, no....I have questions, concerns and am requesting some attention and

I brow beat my doctor into compliance. I have both Lipedema and Dercum's. He was just going to let me progress even after I gave him the standards of care. I asked him was it acceptable to him that I know more about both disorders and the lymphatic system than he does without the college debt. I also asked if letting a disease progress out of ignorance when it doesn't have to a part of his do no harm oath. I have never seen a health professional rally so quickly. Don't be afraid to call them out on their B.S. Also don't be afraid to file a formal grievance with the hospital and your insurance company. Let them no that you aren't being treated properly and it will cost them more money in the end.

I also have felt dismissed by the medical community. I need a hip replacement, and would like to have liposuction to help return my mobility ☹️

Doctors routinely dismiss women. They allot so little time per patient.

I have medical trauma. I have had several physicals where the doctor has not touched me. The assistant takes my temperature and my blood pressure and the doctor comes in for 10 minutes and does not touch me. I have asthma I have arthritis two minute conversation and I leave with nothing. No physical therapy no arthritis, cream or Novocain patches. Not an anti-inflammatory. Not even a piece of paper with exercises at home to do. I have gone to 10 different doctors in the last five years and that’s just how they treat you . Better off to self diagnose and then ask her referral to a specialist

I hope you immediately changed Drs.
I know exactly what I was doing when the 1st symptoms started, about 43 years ago. I was given a steroid cream, for the swelling and rash, I still use it, as little as possible and never daily, maybe 2x a week, it does relieve some of the symptoms. I will be sending for the information packets for myself and my new Drs. (I just changed to 3rd Dr. since I’ve been in newer area). About 3 years ago during an exam, a student was visiting, I said he could sit in on Dr visit, after 1 minute, he asked how long I’ve had this murmur, I was 71 and this was the very 1st time I had heard about it, not only I’ve been diagnosed, but I’m so lucky, I have 2, probably since birth. I will wait to start a treatment plan until after I talk to the new heart Dr I will be seeing soon. I was pretty sick as a kid, tonsillitis, had them removed and occasional flu as I got older. I have had 5 births, tubes tied, very serious Gallbladder surgery, thru all these medical procedures??? I never heard 1 mention of a murmur let alone 2.
I thank Jesus that I am still very active at 74 and I thank YouTube for all the information that is out there.
My grandmother lived to 101, my mother is 94, father died of cancer at 57. Life goes on, just wound like it to be a little less painful. What a crazy time to be alive.
God Bless you on your journey.

She agreed and made it easy. You wanted a specialist and she gave you one. I would love for things to happen that fast! LOL

She referred you to a specialist. What's wrong with that?

That’s what many doctors do.. I went with major knee swelling to a ortho doctor. He didn’t talked to me at all except he needs to drain the fluid.. he injected with cortisol that he didn’t told me prior the injection only because I asked.. I didn’t get diagnosed nothing he left the room without saying anything.. welcome to our new healthcare system !

I'm 53 and have just recently discovered Lipedema. As I've read more on the subject, I'm checking things off all over the place, but no doctor seems to even know about it. I'm pretty sure I have Stage 1 Lipedema. The pain is almost unbearable. I wish I could get diagnosed.

You felt that way because you were not worth her time. They only want patients that can be prescribed something that keeps you going back. How can she possibly pay her boat payment with

Wait until you go to a cardiologist. Same demeaning treatment. You’re just a billing statement to them.

If she's general practitioner. She did the she did the proper thing. She sent you to someone who specializes in that field. How can you comment on something that you don't specialize she knows the symptoms but that is not her her specialty.

When I brought up the possibility of having lipedema with my doctor he dismissed it as "lipedema is just fat" (word for word), he didn't even bother to look at my legs at all and wouldn't listen to me when I tried to tell him lipedema is a real condition. Months later I am still undiagnosed, as finding a lipedema specialist in Sydney is hard.
