What is ETL? Part 1 (Data Engineering & Data Science)

You'd be hard pressed to find a Software Engineering subdomain that does not require comfortability with ETL. Application developers write scripts that listen for requests with data, process the data, and then store the processed data in a database. DevOps engineers encounter ETL many times within the software delivery lifecycle they automate. Data Engineers specialize in ETL processes and scale them to handle big data. You get the point.

This short describes ETL - a common buzzword thrown around in many Software Engineering subdomains. I don't like buzzwords being used without precise knowledge to back them, so this short, as well as part 2 of this short, I aim to disambiguate the word by explaining how fluidly ETL appears across many subdomains of Software Engineering, and how fluidly it appears in various programming languages even within one subdomain.
