Imagine how useful this has been to me...I've got a FT 817 ( and I'm not even licensed yet...but I will be !) I got this particular radio for two reasons..1. I had to be portable...and 2. I wanted something I could grow with...so all this information is ( as far as I'm concerned anyway ) bloody brilliant. Many thanks! :-)

Another mod I did was to machine a new tuning knob from brass with an offset, ball-bearinged finger spinner. Came out nice.

Brilliant video, Julian. As usual 😉
I most liked the idea of using an external small PA in order not to overdrive the FT817 in Digimodes.

Keep up the good work!!!

This is an excellent and informative video. It told me all I wanted to know about extras for the FT817/8. Thank-you.

Great info again Julian. I'm getting an 817 next week from a member in our local radio club. It will be my first HF radio. I'm on a budget and he is looking after me as he knows I'm a new HAM. I have alot to learn but will definately look into all the options you provided. I think the DRAWS hat is not a viable option but I still want to do most digital modes if possible. I have a Pi4 and will be setting that up soon. I also bought a Surface Go with LTE and GPS, waiting for it in the post. That 10w amp option is also a great idea.
I really like all your video's and appreciate all you do for the community. Take care out there in the wilderness. 🥶✌️🤓 73

While I own neither of the Yaesu radios featured here, all the "portable gear & mods" are a good check off for any field radio set up. Another great video Julian !

So, the Amp pretty much negates blown finals ? This should be the reference 817/818 channel ! Eating everything up ! Love your channel !!!

Thank you for the FT817 and Ft818 ideas I have just purchased a second-hand FT817 so I am looking forward to getting out and trying it in many locations. I will most likely start with an HWEF antenna and a mobile HF whip which covers from 80 meters to 70cm.

Another Great Video, with a plethora of information, again Julian, you pack allot of references into a single space.
I have recently purchased an 897D with all options, and am looking foward to portable ops after arrival. Between Callum, Gil, Eric and Yourself, you inspire and keep the hobby very real, practical, and interesting, cheers Julian, .. 73s We always look foward to you pragmatic approach to everything, A92GW, AE1TP... ciao

Got an 818 on the way. I got some great ideas and tips from this video, thanks! I’ve got a friend printing my power adapter and I’ll get some aluminum to make a set of rails to protect the knobs and ports.

Really good overview! I use my trusty FT-817ND for nearly 10 years. Even it is a little outdated compared to my KX2 it is still a good and kind of rough and tough radio. If I had to decide which radio to grab and run, it surely will be the 817! 73 Stephan. DF6PA
