After I dusted off my FT-817 I searched for a quick video on charging the thing. Then you showed up in a T-shirt of my favorite band Genesis. Tnx...73, Bas PE4BAS

Hi Chris, since the recent news that Yaesu are to discontinue the 817/8 I have taken my 817 out of its bag and given it a bit of a dust down. I have been going portable for about 4 years now and 2 years ago I moved over to the 857. Although a little more power hungry, with the advent of lifepo4, batteries have become more efficient and power consumption on my 10w is not too bad. I tend to use the battery tray with LADDA 2450mAh rechargeable s when I don't have my usual power source but still charge them through the radio using the Green wire mod. Thank you so much for your sterling efforts when out /p and who knows, one day I might just get you in the log.... M6KVK 73

While it may seem an inconvenience, most of the time you don’t want to be charging while using external power, so the manual selection makes perfect sense. Only charge when needed. Thanks! Nice video. Love my 818, would buy another if it sauced.

I find the internal battery quite handy for a quick check of a portable antenna testing or tune up in my yard. This reminds me to put mine on charge for a while thanks.

Hi Cris, this was a good video and informative. I recently bought a used FT817ND and like most people, you only read the instructions when something isn't right :o) The second stage setting the front function buttons cured my charging issue. My FT817 also has the BHI DSP, have you done a video on this? John G8TDU

Thanks for the charging tip. I'm new to the Yaesu ft 817. I can send and receive now that I've programmed it, but I've been told that my mic level is too low. How do you adjust this so I don't have to yell in the mic?

Hi Chris could you please give me some advice, when you use external batteries, can you leave the internal batteries in the Yaesu? Thanks Tim

I have to remove the battery before storing my 817nd... However with the FT818... there is no drain, so the battery will not need charging. Although, I would not store any radio with a battery installed. You are correct, the internal battery is useful, and I have made lots of contacts both on VHF and HF with it. 73, Tim, DK8MT...
