Toaca is a percussion musical instrument from the class of idiophones used in Orthodox liturgy. The bagpipes and bells are the only musical instruments accepted by the Orthodox Church.
The scabbard is most often made of a wooden board or sometimes of a thick bent iron plate, which is beaten with one or two mallets at the times fixed for prayer. Percussion is done rhythmically, and depending on where the wooden or metal plate is struck, sounds of different pitches can be obtained, thus creating a simple melodic line.
